Many of the commentators assume unquestioningly that this relates to female slaves, and that the particle aw ("or") denotes a permissible alternative. This interpretation is, in my opinion, inadmissible inasmuch as it is based on the assumption that sexual intercourse with ones female slave is permitted without marriage: an assumption, which is contradicted by the Quran itself (see 4:3, 24, 25 and 24:32, with the corresponding notes). Nor is this the only objection to the above-mentioned interpretation. Since the Quran applies the term "believers" to men and women alike, and since the term azwaj ("spouses"), too, denotes both the male and the female partners in marriage, there is no reason for attributing to the phrase ma malakat aymanuhum the meaning of "their female slaves"; and since, on the other hand, it is out of the question that female and male slaves could have been referred to here it is obvious that this phrase does not relate to slaves at all, but has the same meaning as in 4:24 - namely, "those whom they rightfully possess through wedlock (see note on 4:24) - with the significant difference that in the present context this expression relates to both husbands and wives, who "rightfully possess" one another by virtue of marriage. On the basis of this interpretation, the particle aw which precedes this clause does not denote an alternative ("or") but is, rather, in the nature of an explanatory amplification, more or less analogous to the phrase "in other words" or "that is", thus giving to the whole sentence the meaning, "save with their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]", etc. (Cf. a similar construction 25:62 - "for him who has the will to take thought -that is [lit., "or"], has the will to be grateful".)] for then, behold, they are free of all blame, |
| 23:7 فمن ابتغى وراء ذلك فاولئك هم العادون |

| Literal | Then that you are (on) the Resurrection Day being resurrected/revived. |

| Yusuf Ali | Again, on the Day of Judgment, will ye be raised up. |
| Pickthal | Then lo! on the Day of Resurrection ye are raised (again). |

| Literal | And We had created above you, seven stages/layers, and We were not from/of the creation ignoring/neglecting . |

| Yusuf Ali | And We have made, above you, seven tracts; and We are never unmindful of (our) Creation. |
| Pickthal | And We have created above you seven paths, and We are never unmindful of creation. |
| Arberry | And We created above you seven ways, and We were not heedless of creation. |

| 23:18 وانزلنا من السماء ماء بقدر فاسكناه في الارض وانا على ذهاب به لقادرون |

| Transliteration | Waanzalna mina alssama-i maan biqadarin faaskannahu fee al-ardi wa-inna AAala thahabin bihi laqadiroona |
| Literal | And We descended from the sky/space water with a measure/quantity , so We settled it in the land/Earth , and We are on taking away/eliminating with it capable/able (E) . |

| Yusuf Ali | And We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease). |
| Pickthal | And we send down from the sky water in measure, and We give it lodging in the earth, and lo! We are Able to withdraw it. |

| Transliteration | Faansha/na lakum bihi jannatin min nakheelin waaAAnabin lakum feeha fawakihu katheeratun waminha ta/kuloona |
| Literal | So We originated/developed for you with it treed gardens/paradises from palm trees and grapes, for you in it (are) many/much fruits, and from it you eat. |

| Literal | And a tree emerges from Sinai's mountain , it sprouts/grows with the oil/fat/grease and dye/colour to the eaters/gluttons. |

| Yusuf Ali | Also a tree springing out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil, and relish for those who use it for food. |
| Pickthal | And a tree that springeth forth from Mount Sinai that groweth oil and relish for the eaters. |

| 23:21 وان لكم في الانعام لعبرة نسقيكم مما في بطونها ولكم فيها منافع كثيرة ومنها تاكلون |

| Transliteration | Wa-inna lakum fee al-anAAami laAAibratan nusqeekum mimma fee butooniha walakum feeha manafiAAu katheeratun waminha ta/kuloona |
| Literal | And that truly for you in the camels/livestock (is) an example/warning (E) , We make you drink from what (is) in its bellies/insides, and for you in it (are) many benefits/uses, and from it you eat. |

| Yusuf Ali | And in cattle (too) ye have an instructive example: from within their bodies We produce (milk) for you to drink; there are, in them, (besides), numerous (other) benefits for you; and of their (meat) ye eat; |

| Transliteration | Walaqad arsalna noohan ila qawmihi faqala ya qawmi oAAbudoo Allaha ma lakum min ilahin ghayruhu afala tattaqoona |
| Literal | And We had sent Noah to his nation, so he said: "You my nation, worship God, (there is) no God for you from other than Him, so do you not fear and obey?" |

| Yusuf Ali | (Further, We sent a long line of prophets for your instruction). We sent Noah to his people: He said, "O my people! worship Allah! Ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?" |
| Pickthal | And We verily sent Noah unto his folk, and he said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)? |

| 23:24 فقال الملؤا الذين كفروا من قومه ماهذا الا بشر مثلكم يريد ان يتفضل عليكم ولو شاء الله لانزل ملائكة ماسمعنا بهذا في ابائنا الاولين |

| Transliteration | Faqala almalao allatheena kafaroo min qawmihi ma hatha illa basharun mithlukum yureedu an yatafaddala AAalaykum walaw shaa Allahu laanzala mala-ikatan ma samiAAna bihatha fee aba-ina al-awwaleena |
| Literal | So said the nobles/assembly from those who disbelieved from his nation: "That (is) not except a human similar to you he wants that (he) makes himself more preferred/favoured on (to) you, and if God willed/wanted , He would have descended angels, we did not hear with that in our fathers/forefathers, the first/beginners." |

| Yusuf Ali | The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old." |
| Pickthal | But the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: This is only a mortal like you who would make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels. We heard not of this in the case of our fathers of old. |
| Arberry | Said the Council of the unbelievers of his people, 'This is naught but a mortal like yourselves, who desires to gain superiority over you. And if God willed, He would have sent down angels. We never heard of this among, our fathers, the ancients. |
| Shakir | And the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: He is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who desires that he may have superiority over you, and if Allah had pleased, He could certainly have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our fathers of yore: |
| Sarwar | The chiefs of the unbelievers said to the others, "He is a mere mortal like you. He wants only to be superior to you. Had God wanted He would have sent the angels (instead of him). We have never heard from our fathers anything like what he says. |
| Khalifa | The leaders who disbelieved among his people said, "This is no more than a human like you, who wants to gain prominence among you. Had GOD willed, He could have sent down angels. We never heard of anything like this from our ancestors. |
| Hilali/Khan | But the chiefs of those who disbelieved among his people said: "He is no more than a human being like you, he seeks to make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing among our fathers of old. |
| H/K/Saheeh | But the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allah had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers. |
| Malik | The chiefs of the unbelievers among his people said, "Noah is but a human like you, he desires to assert his superiority over you. If Allah wanted to send Messengers, He could have sent down angels, we have never heard such a thing as he says from our forefathers."[24] |
| QXP | But the leaders among his community who refused to acknowledge the Truth, said, "This is only a man like you who wants to become prominent among you. God could have sent angels if He willed (to convey a message to us). We never heard this from our forefathers. |
| Maulana Ali | But the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: He is nothing but a mortal like yourselves, who desires to have superiority over you. And if Allah had pleased, He could have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our fathers of yore. |
| Free Minds | But the leaders who rejected from among his people said: "What is this but a human like you? He wants to make himself better than you! And if it was indeed God's will, He would have sent down Angels. We did not hear such a thing among our fathers of old." |
| Qaribullah | The unbelieving assembly of his nation said: 'This is but a human like you, who desires to gain superiority over you. Had Allah willed, He could have sent down angels. We never heard of this among our ancient forefathers. |

| George Sale | And the chiefs of his people, who believed not, said, this is no other than a man, as ye are: He seeketh to raise himself to a superiority over you. If God had pleased to have sent a messenger unto you, He would surely have sent angels: We have not heard this of our forefathers. |
| JM Rodwell | But the chiefs of the people who believed not said, "This is but a man like yourselves: he fain would raise himself above you: but had it pleased God to send, He would have sent angels: We heard not of this with our sires of old;- |

| Asad | But the great ones among his people, who refused to acknowledge the truth, replied: "This [man] is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who wants to make himself superior to you! For, if God had willed [to convey a message unto us], He would surely have sent down angels; [moreover,] we have never heard [anything like] this from our forebears of old! [Lit., "in connection with (fi) our early forebears" - a Quranic allusion to the fact that people often reject a new ethical proposition on no better grounds than that, it conflicts with their "inherited" habits of thought and ways of life. Indirectly, this allusion implies a condemnation of all blind taqlid, i.e., an unthinking acceptance of religious doctrines or assertions, which are not unequivocally supported by divine revelation, the explicit teachings of a prophet, or the evidence of unprejudiced reason.] |
| 23:25 ان هو الا رجل به جنة فتربصوا به حتى حين |

| Transliteration | In huwa illa rajulun bihi jinnatun fatarabbasoo bihi hatta heenin |
| Literal | That he is except a man with him (is) insanity, so wait with him until a time . |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | (And some said): "He is only a man possessed: wait (and have patience) with him for a time." |
| Pickthal | He is only a man in whom is a madness, so watch him for a while. |
| Arberry | He is naught but a man bedevilled; so wait on him for a time. |
| Shakir | He is only a madman, so bear with him for a time. |
| Sarwar | He is only an insane person. Wait for some time. Perhaps he will come to his senses." |
| Khalifa | "He is simply a man gone crazy. Just ignore him for awhile." |
| Hilali/Khan | "He is only a man in whom is madness, so wait for him a while." |
| H/K/Saheeh | He is not but a man possessed with madness, so wait concerning him for a time. |
| Malik | Some of them said: "He is just a madman, so bear with him for a while."[25] |
| QXP | He is nothing but a madman, so watch him for a while." |
| Maulana Ali | He is only a madman, so bear with him for a time. |
| Free Minds | "He is no more than a man who has madness in him. So keep watch on him for a while." |
| Qaribullah | He is nothing else except a man who is mad, so watch him for awhile. |

| 23:26 قال رب انصرني بما كذبون |

| Transliteration | Qala rabbi onsurnee bima kaththabooni |
| Literal | He said: "My Lord, give me victory/aid because (of) what they denied me ." |

| Transliteration | Faawhayna ilayhi ani isnaAAi alfulka bi-aAAyunina wawahyina fa-itha jaa amruna wafara alttannooru faosluk feeha min kullin zawjayni ithnayni waahlaka illa man sabaqa AAalayhi alqawlu minhum wala tukhatibnee fee allatheena thalamoo innahum mughraqoona |
| Literal | So We inspired/transmitted to him: "That produce/manufacture the ship/ships with Our eyes/sights, and Our inspiration/revelation , so if Our order/command came, and the furnace/kiln/elten'noor boiled over/gushed, so enter/pass in it from every/each pair/couple two, and your family/people , except whom the words preceded on him from them, and do not address/converse with Me in (about) those who were unjust/oppressive, that they are being drowned/sunken." |
