23:1 سورة المؤمنون بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ قد افلح المؤمنون

al-Mu'minun 023:002

23:2 الذين هم في صلاتهم خاشعون


TransliterationAllatheena hum fee salatihim khashiAAoona
LiteralThose who in their prayers they are humble/submissive .

al-Mu'minun 023:003

23:3 والذين هم عن اللغو معرضون


TransliterationWaallatheena hum AAani allaghwi muAAridoona
LiteralAnd those who from the nonsense/senseless talk, they are objecting/turning away .

Yusuf AliWho avoid vain talk;
PickthalAnd who shun vain conversation,
Arberry and from idle talk turn away
ShakirAnd who keep aloof from what is vain,
Sarwarwho avoid impious talks,
KhalifaAnd they avoid vain talk.
Hilali/KhanAnd those who turn away from Al-Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk, falsehood, and all that Allah has forbidden).
H/K/SaheehAnd they who turn away from ill speech
Malikwho avoid vain talk,[3]
QXPAnd who turn away from all that is senseless. (And they value time).

al-Mu'minun 023:004

23:4 والذين هم للزكاة فاعلون


TransliterationWaallatheena hum lilzzakati faAAiloona
LiteralAnd those who to the charity/purification , they are making/doing.

Yusuf AliWho are active in deeds of charity;
PickthalAnd who are payers of the poor-due;
Arberry and at almsgiving are active
ShakirAnd who are givers of poor-rate,
Sarwarpay their religious tax
KhalifaAnd they give their obligatory charity (Zakat).
Hilali/KhanAnd those who pay the Zakat .
H/K/SaheehAnd they who are observant of zakah
Malikwho are punctual in the payment of Zakah (charity),[4]
QXPThey are the setters up of the Just Economic Order of ZAKAT (in which wealth circulates in the society and nourishes every individual).

al-Mu'minun 023:005

23:5 والذين هم لفروجهم حافظون


TransliterationWaallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoona
LiteralAnd those who to their genital parts between their legs they are protecting/guarding .

Yusuf AliWho abstain from sex,
PickthalAnd who guard their modesty -
Arberry and guard their private parts
ShakirAnd who guard their private parts,
Sarwarand restrain their carnal desires

al-Mu'minun 023:006

23:6 الا على ازواجهم او ماملكت ايمانهم فانهم غير ملومين


TransliterationIlla AAala azwajihim aw ma malakat aymanuhum fa-innahum ghayru maloomeena
LiteralExcept on (to) their spouses or what their rights/oaths owned/possessed (i.e. caregivers under contract), so they truly are not blameworthy/blamed.

Yusuf AliExcept with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,
PickthalSave from their wives or the (slaves) that their right hands possess, for then they are not blameworthy,

Asad[not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: [Lit., "or those whom their right hands possess" (aw ma malakat aymanuhum). Many of the commentators assume unquestioningly that this relates to female slaves, and that the particle aw ("or") denotes a permissible alternative. This interpretation is, in my opinion, inadmissible inasmuch as it is based on the assumption that sexual intercourse with ones female slave is permitted without marriage: an assumption, which is contradicted by the Quran itself (see 4:3, 24, 25 and 24:32, with the corresponding notes). Nor is this the only objection to the above-mentioned interpretation. Since the Quran applies the term "believers" to men and women alike, and since the term azwaj ("spouses"), too, denotes both the male and the female partners in marriage, there is no reason for attributing to the phrase ma malakat aymanuhum the meaning of "their female slaves"; and since, on the other hand, it is out of the question that female and male slaves could have been referred to here it is obvious that this phrase does not relate to slaves at all, but has the same meaning as in 4:24 - namely, "those whom they rightfully possess through wedlock (see note on 4:24) - with the significant difference that in the present context this expression relates to both husbands and wives, who "rightfully possess" one another by virtue of marriage. On the basis of this interpretation, the particle aw which precedes this clause does not denote an alternative ("or") but is, rather, in the nature of an explanatory amplification, more or less analogous to the phrase "in other words" or "that is", thus giving to the whole sentence the meaning, "save with their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]", etc. (Cf. a similar construction 25:62 - "for him who has the will to take thought -that is [lit., "or"], has the will to be grateful".)] for then, behold, they are free of all blame,



al-Mu'minun 023:007

23:7 فمن ابتغى وراء ذلك فاولئك هم العادون


TransliterationFamani ibtagha waraa thalika faola-ika humu alAAadoona
LiteralSo who asked/desired behind/beyond that, so those are the transgressors .

Yusuf AliBut those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors;-
PickthalBut whoso craveth beyond that, such are transgressors -
Arberry (but whosoever seeks after more than that, those are the transgressors)
ShakirBut whoever seeks to go beyond that, these are they that exceed the limits;
SarwarThose who desire to go beyond such limits they commit transgression,
KhalifaThose who transgress these limits are the transgressors.

al-Mu'minun 023:008

23:8 والذين هم لاماناتهم وعهدهم راعون


TransliterationWaallatheena hum li-amanatihim waAAahdihim raAAoona
LiteralAnd those whom to their securities/trusts , and their promise/contract they are protecting/observing

Yusuf AliThose who faithfully observe their trusts and their covenants;
PickthalAnd who are shepherds of their pledge and their covenant,
Arberry and who preserve their trusts and their covenant
ShakirAnd those who are keepers of their trusts and their covenant,
Sarwarthose who are true to their trust,
KhalifaWhen it comes to deposits entrusted to them, as well as any agreements they make, they are trustworthy.
Hilali/KhanThose who are faithfully true to their Amanat (all the duties which Allah has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts etc.) and to their covenants;
H/K/SaheehAnd they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
Malik- who are true to their trust and covenants,[8]

al-Mu'minun 023:009

23:9 والذين هم على صلواتهم يحافظون


TransliterationWaallatheena hum AAala salawatihim yuhafithoona
LiteralAnd those whom, they are on their prayers they are protecting/observing .

Yusuf AliAnd who (strictly) guard their prayers;-
PickthalAnd who pay heed to their prayers.
Arberry and who observe their prayers.
ShakirAnd those who keep a guard on their prayers;
Sarwarto their promise,
KhalifaAnd they observe their Contact Prayers (Salat) regularly.

23:10 اولئك هم الوارثون

al-Mu'minun 023:011

23:11 الذين يرثون الفردوس هم فيها خالدون


TransliterationAllatheena yarithoona alfirdawsa hum feeha khalidoona
LiteralThose who inherit the Elfirdowse/one of the paradises/garden , they are in it immortally/ eternally.

Yusuf AliWho will inherit Paradise: they will dwell therein (for ever).
PickthalWho will inherit paradise. There they will abide.
Arberry who shall inherit Paradise therein dwelling forever.
ShakirWho shall inherit the Paradise; they shall abide therein.

al-Mu'minun 023:012

23:12 ولقد خلقنا الانسان من سلالة من طين


TransliterationWalaqad khalaqna al-insana min sulalatin min teenin
LiteralAnd We had created the human from (a) descendent/gene/extract from mud/clay .

Yusuf AliMan We did create from a quintessence (of clay);
PickthalVerily We created man from a product of wet earth;

ShakirAnd certainly We created man of an extract of clay,
SarwarWe have created the human being from an extract of clay

AsadNOW, INDEED, We create man out of the essence of clay, [The frequent Quranic references to mans being "created out of clay or out of dust" or (as in this instance) "out of the essence (sulalah) of clay point to the fact that his body is composed of various organic and inorganic substances existing on or in the earth, as well as to the continuous transmutation of those substances, through the intake of earth-grown food, into reproductive cells (Razi) - thus stressing man's humble origin, and hence the debt of gratitude which he owes to God for having endowed him with a conscious soul. The past tense in verses 12 - 14 (lit., "We have created", "We have caused him to remain", etc.) emphasizes the fact that all this has been ordained by God and has been happening again and again ever since man was brought into being by Him; in the above context, this recurrence is brought out best by the use of the present tense.]



al-Mu'minun 023:013

23:13 ثم جعلناه نطفة في قرار مكين


TransliterationThumma jaAAalnahu nutfatan fee qararin makeenin
LiteralThen We created/made him a drop/male's or female's secretion in (a) firm/established bottom .

Yusuf AliThen We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed;
PickthalThen placed him as a drop (of seed) in a safe lodging;
Arberry then We set him, a drop, in a receptacle secure,
ShakirThen We made him a small seed in a firm resting-place,
Sarwarwhich was then turned into a living germ and placed in safe depository.
KhalifaSubsequently, we reproduced him from a tiny drop, that is placed into a well protected repository.
Hilali/KhanThereafter We made him (the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge) (and lodged it) in a safe lodging (womb of the woman).

Malikthen placed him as a drop of semen in a firm resting place,[13]
QXPThen placed him as the male and female gamete (the product of conception) in a safe lodging.

al-Mu'minun 023:014

23:14 ثم خلقنا النطفة علقة فخلقنا العلقة مضغة فخلقنا المضغة عظاما فكسونا العظام لحما ثم انشاناه خلقا اخر فتبارك الله احسن الخالقين


TransliterationThumma khalaqna alnnutfata AAalaqatan fakhalaqna alAAalaqata mudghatan fakhalaqna almudghata AAithaman fakasawna alAAithama lahman thumma ansha/nahu khalqan akhara fatabaraka Allahu ahsanu alkhaliqeena
LiteralThen We created the drop/male's or female's secretion (into) a blood clot/sperm/ semen , so We created the blood clot/sperm/semen (into) a piece of something chewable of flesh or other , so We created the piece of something chewable of flesh or other (into) bones , so We dressed/clothed the bones (with) flesh/meat, then We originated/developed him (into) another creation, so blessed (is) God, best (of) the creators.

Yusuf AliThen We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood; then of that clot We made a (foetus) lump; then we made out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with flesh; then we developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the best to create!
PickthalThen fashioned We the drop a clot, then fashioned We the clot a little lump, then fashioned We the little lump bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it as another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of creators!
Arberry then We created of the drop a clot then We created of the clot a tissue then We created of the tissue bones then We garmented the bones in flesh; thereafter We produced him as another creature. So blessed be God, the fairest of creators!
ShakirThen We made the seed a clot, then We made the clot a lump of flesh, then We made (in) the lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, then We caused it to grow into another creation, so blessed be Allah, the best of the creators.
SarwarThe living germ, then, was turned into a shapeless lump of flesh from which bones were formed. The bones, then, were covered with flesh. At this stage, We caused it to become another creature. All blessings belong to God, the best Creator.
KhalifaThen we developed the drop into a hanging (embryo), then developed the hanging (embryo) into a bite-size (fetus), then created the bite-size (fetus) into bones, then covered the bones with flesh. We thus produce a new creature. Most blessed is GOD, the best Creator.
Hilali/KhanThen We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of creators.
H/K/SaheehThen We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.
Malikthen changed the semen into a leechlike mass, then leechlike mass into a fetus lump, then fetus lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought him forth as quite a different creature from the embryo - so blessed is Allah, the best of all creators.[14]
QXPThen We fashioned the gametes into zygote, a clot, then the hanging little lump, the embryo. Then We created bones within the embryonic lump, and then clothed the bones with flesh. (Thus We designed it into a fetus). And then We made it into a new creation (the human infant). So Blessed is Allah, The Best of creators. (33:7-9), (71:14).
Maulana AliThen We make the life-germ a clot, then We make the clot a lump of flesh, then We make (in) the lump of flesh bones, then We clothe the bones with flesh, then We cause it to grow into another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of creators!
Free MindsThen We created the seed into an embryo, then We created the embryo into a fetus, then We created the fetus into bone, then We covered the bone with flesh, then We brought forth a new creation. So glory be to God, the best of creators.

George SaleAfterwards We made the seed coagulated blood; and We formed the coagulated blood into a piece of flesh: Then We formed the piece of flesh into bones; and We cloathed those bones with flesh: Then We produced the same by another creation. Wherefore blessed be God, the most excellent creator!

Asadand then We create out of the drop of sperm a germ-cell, and then We create out of the germ-cell an embryonic lump, and then We create within the embryonic lump bones, and then We clothe the bones with flesh - and then We bring [all] this into being as a new creation: [Lit., "as another creature", i.e., existing independently of the mother's body.] hallowed, therefore, is God, the best of artisans! [Lit., "the best of creators". As Tabari points out, the Arabs apply the designation "creator" to every artisan (sani) - a usage also current in European languages with reference to the "creation" of works of art and imagination. Since God is the only Creator in the real, primary sense of this word, the phrase ahsan al-khaliqin must be understood in this secondary sense of the term khaliq (cf. Taj al-Arus, art. khalaqa).]



al-Mu'minun 023:015

23:15 ثم انكم بعد ذلك لميتون


TransliterationThumma innakum baAAda thalika lamayyitoona
LiteralThen that you are after that dying (E) .

al-Mu'minun 023:016

23:16 ثم انكم يوم القيامة تبعثون


TransliterationThumma innakum yawma alqiyamati tubAAathoona
LiteralThen that you are (on) the Resurrection Day being resurrected/revived.

Yusuf AliAgain, on the Day of Judgment, will ye be raised up.
PickthalThen lo! on the Day of Resurrection ye are raised (again).
Arberry then on the Day of Resurrection you shall surely be raised up.
ShakirThen surely on the day of resurrection you shall be raised.
Sarwarand you will be brought back to life again on the Day of Resurrection.
KhalifaThen, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be resurrected.
Hilali/KhanThen (again), surely, you will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection.
H/K/SaheehThen indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.
Malikthen most surely you shall be raised to life again on the Day of Resurrection.[16]

al-Mu'minun 023:017

23:17 ولقد خلقنا فوقكم سبع طرائق وماكنا عن الخلق غافلين


TransliterationWalaqad khalaqna fawqakum sabAAa tara-iqa wama kunna AAani alkhalqi ghafileena
LiteralAnd We had created above you, seven stages/layers, and We were not from/of the creation ignoring/neglecting .

Yusuf AliAnd We have made, above you, seven tracts; and We are never unmindful of (our) Creation.
PickthalAnd We have created above you seven paths, and We are never unmindful of creation.
Arberry And We created above you seven ways, and We were not heedless of creation.
ShakirAnd certainly We made above you seven heavens; and never are We heedless of creation.
SarwarWe have created seven heavens above you and have never been neglectful to Our Creation.
KhalifaWe created above you seven universes in layers, and we are never unaware of a single creature in them.
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed We have created above you seven heavens (one over the other), and We are never unaware of the creation.
H/K/SaheehAnd We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware.
MalikWe have made seven avenues (heavens) above you; and We are never unmindful of Our creation.[17]
QXPAnd, indeed We have created above you seven celestial orbits, and We are never unmindful of creation. (35:1).
Maulana AliAnd indeed We have made above you seven ways -- and never are We heedless of creation.
Free MindsAnd We have created above you seven passageways, and We were never unaware of the creations.
Qaribullah We have created seven ways above you; of Our creation, We are never inattentive.

George SaleAnd We have created over you seven heavens: And We are not negligent of what We have created.
JM RodwellAnd we have created over you seven heavens:-and we are not careless of the creation.

AsadAnd, indeed, We have created above you seven [celestial] orbits: [Lit., "seven paths", which may signify the orbits of the visible planets or - as the classical commentators assume - the "seven heavens" (i.e., cosmic systems) repeatedly spoken of in the Quran. In either case, the number "seven" is used metonymically, indicating multiplicity. See in this connection note on 2:29.] and never are We unmindful of [any aspect of Our] creation.



al-Mu'minun 023:018

23:18 وانزلنا من السماء ماء بقدر فاسكناه في الارض وانا على ذهاب به لقادرون


TransliterationWaanzalna mina alssama-i maan biqadarin faaskannahu fee al-ardi wa-inna AAala thahabin bihi laqadiroona
LiteralAnd We descended from the sky/space water with a measure/quantity , so We settled it in the land/Earth , and We are on taking away/eliminating with it capable/able (E) .

Yusuf AliAnd We send down water from the sky according to (due) measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly are able to drain it off (with ease).
PickthalAnd we send down from the sky water in measure, and We give it lodging in the earth, and lo! We are Able to withdraw it.
Arberry And We sent down out of heaven water in measure and lodged it in the earth; and We are able to take it away.
ShakirAnd We send down water from the cloud according to a measure, then We cause it to settle in the earth, and most surely We are able to carry it away.
SarwarWe have sent a measure of water from the sky to stay on earth and We have the power to take it away.
KhalifaWe send down from the sky water, in exact measure, then we store it in the ground. Certainly, we can let it escape.
Hilali/KhanAnd We sent down from the sky water (rain) in (due) measure, and We gave it lodging in the earth, and verily, We are Able to take it away.
H/K/SaheehAnd We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away.
MalikWe send down water from the sky according to a due measure, then We cause it to settle in the soil - you should know that if We please, We can certainly take it away[18]
QXPAnd We send down from the sky water in due measure, and We lodge it in the earth. But, behold, We are Able to withdraw it.
Maulana AliAnd We send down water from the cloud according to a measure, then We cause it to settle in the earth, and We are indeed able to carry it away.

al-Mu'minun 023:019

23:19 فانشانا لكم به جنات من نخيل واعناب لكم فيها فواكه كثيرة ومنها تاكلون


TransliterationFaansha/na lakum bihi jannatin min nakheelin waaAAnabin lakum feeha fawakihu katheeratun waminha ta/kuloona
LiteralSo We originated/developed for you with it treed gardens/paradises from palm trees and grapes, for you in it (are) many/much fruits, and from it you eat.

Yusuf AliWith it We grow for you gardens of date-palms and vines: in them have ye abundant fruits: and of them ye eat (and have enjoyment),-
PickthalThen We produce for you therewith gardens of date-palms and grapes, wherein is much fruit for you and whereof ye eat;
Arberry Then We produced for you therewith gardens of palms and vines wherein are many fruits for you, and of them you eat,
ShakirThen We cause to grow thereby gardens of palm trees and grapes for you; you have in them many fruits and from them do you eat;
SarwarWe have established for you gardens of palm trees and vineyards with this water with many fruits for you to consume.
KhalifaWith it, we produce for you orchards of date palms, grapes, all kinds of fruits, and various foods.
Hilali/KhanThen We brought forth for you therewith gardens of date-palms and grapes, wherein is much fruit for you, and whereof you eat.
H/K/SaheehAnd We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat.
Malik- then with it We cause to grow gardens of palm trees and grapes for you; yielding abundant fruit for you to eat,[19]
QXPAnd from it, We produce for you gardens of date-palms and grapes, wherein you have abundant fruit and you eat thereof.
Maulana AliThen We cause to grow thereby gardens of palm-trees and grapes for you. You have therein many fruits and of them you eat;

al-Mu'minun 023:020

23:20 وشجرة تخرج من طور سيناء تنبت بالدهن وصبغ للاكلين


TransliterationWashajaratan takhruju min toori saynaa tanbutu bialdduhni wasibghin lilakileena
LiteralAnd a tree emerges from Sinai's mountain , it sprouts/grows with the oil/fat/grease and dye/colour to the eaters/gluttons.

Yusuf AliAlso a tree springing out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil, and relish for those who use it for food.
PickthalAnd a tree that springeth forth from Mount Sinai that groweth oil and relish for the eaters.
Arberry and a tree issuing from the Mount of Sinai that bears oil and seasoning for all to eat.
ShakirAnd a tree that grows out of Mount Sinai which produces oil and a condiment for those who eat.
SarwarWe have also created for you the tree that grows on Mount Sinai which produces oil and relish for those who use it.
KhalifaAlso, a tree native to Sinai produces oil, as well as relish for the eaters.
Hilali/KhanAnd a tree (olive) that springs forth from Mount Sinai, that grows oil, and (it is a) relish for the eaters.
H/K/SaheehAnd [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat.
Malikand also a tree which grows on Mount Sinai which produces oil and relish as a food for those who like to eat it.[20]
QXPAs well as a tree that grows in abundance in (the lands adjoining) Mount Sinai, yielding oil and relish for all to eat.
Maulana AliAnd a tree that grows out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil and relish for the eaters.
Free MindsAnd a tree which emerges from the mount of Sinai, it grows oil and is a relish for those who eat.
Qaribullah Also, a tree which grows on the Tor of Sinai and gives oil and relish for its eaters.

George SaleAnd We also raise for you a tree springing from mount Sinai; which produceth oil, and a sauce for those who eat.
JM RodwellAnd the tree that groweth up on Mount Sinai; which yieldeth oil and a juice for those who eat.

Asadas well as a tree that issues from [the lands adjoining] Mount Sinai, [I.e., the olive-tree, native to the lands around the eastern Mediterranean, where so many pre-Quranic prophets (here symbolized - because of its sacred associations - by Mount Sinai) lived and preached.] yielding oil and relish for all to eat.



al-Mu'minun 023:021

23:21 وان لكم في الانعام لعبرة نسقيكم مما في بطونها ولكم فيها منافع كثيرة ومنها تاكلون


TransliterationWa-inna lakum fee al-anAAami laAAibratan nusqeekum mimma fee butooniha walakum feeha manafiAAu katheeratun waminha ta/kuloona
LiteralAnd that truly for you in the camels/livestock (is) an example/warning (E) , We make you drink from what (is) in its bellies/insides, and for you in it (are) many benefits/uses, and from it you eat.

Yusuf AliAnd in cattle (too) ye have an instructive example: from within their bodies We produce (milk) for you to drink; there are, in them, (besides), numerous (other) benefits for you; and of their (meat) ye eat;
PickthalAnd lo! in the cattle there is verily a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, and many uses have ye in them, and of them do ye eat;
Arberry And surely in the cattle there is a lesson for you; We give you to drink of what is in their bellies, and many uses there are in them for you, and of them you eat;
ShakirAnd most surely there is a lesson for you in the cattle: We make you to drink of what is in their bellies, and you have in them many advantages and of them you eat,
SarwarThere is a lesson for you concerning cattle. We provide you with drink from their bellies and many other benefits. You can consume them as meat.
KhalifaAnd the livestock should provide you with a lesson. We let you drink (milk) from their bellies, you derive other benefits from them, and some of them you use for food.
Hilali/KhanAnd Verily! In the cattle there is indeed a lesson for you. We give you to drink (milk) of that which is in their bellies. And there are, in them, numerous (other) benefits for you, and of them you eat.
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from that which is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat.
MalikIn cattle, too, there is a lesson for you: from within their bodies We produce milk for you to drink, besides this you gain numerous other benefits; some of them you eat,[21]
QXPAnd, behold, in the cattle too there is a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies. You derive many benefits from them, and also consume their meat. (16:66).
Maulana AliAnd surely there is a lesson for you in the cattle. We make you to drink of what is in their bellies, and you have in them many advantages and of them you eat,

al-Mu'minun 023:022

23:22 وعليها وعلى الفلك تحملون


TransliterationWaAAalayha waAAala alfulki tuhmaloona
LiteralAnd on it and on the ships, you are being carried/lifted .

Yusuf AliAn on them, as well as in slips, ye side.
PickthalAnd on them and on the ship ye are carried.
Arberry and upon them, and on the ships, you are borne.
ShakirAnd on them and on the ships you are borne.
SarwarYou are carried by the animals on land and by the ships in the sea.
KhalifaOn them, and on the ships, you ride.
Hilali/KhanAnd on them, and on ships you are carried.

al-Mu'minun 023:023

23:23 ولقد ارسلنا نوحا الى قومه فقال ياقوم اعبدوا الله مالكم من اله غيره افلا تتقون


TransliterationWalaqad arsalna noohan ila qawmihi faqala ya qawmi oAAbudoo Allaha ma lakum min ilahin ghayruhu afala tattaqoona
LiteralAnd We had sent Noah to his nation, so he said: "You my nation, worship God, (there is) no God for you from other than Him, so do you not fear and obey?"

Yusuf Ali(Further, We sent a long line of prophets for your instruction). We sent Noah to his people: He said, "O my people! worship Allah! Ye have no other god but Him. Will ye not fear (Him)?"
PickthalAnd We verily sent Noah unto his folk, and he said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?
Arberry And We sent Noah to his people; and he, said, 'O my people, serve God! You have no god other than He. Will you not be godfearing?"
ShakirAnd certainly We sent Nuh to his people, and he said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; will you not then guard (against evil)?
SarwarWe sent Noah to his people who said, "My people, worship God for He is your only Lord. Will you then not have fear of Him?".
KhalifaWe sent Noah to his people, saying, "O my people, worship GOD. You have no other god beside Him. Would you not be righteous?"
Hilali/KhanAnd indeed We sent Nooh (Noah) to his people, and he said: "O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him (Islamic Monotheism). Will you not then be afraid (of Him i.e. of His Punishment because of worshipping others besides Him)?"
H/K/SaheehAnd We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?
MalikWe sent Noah to his people. He said, "O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other god but Him, are you not afraid of Him for committing shirk?"[23]
QXP(We took care of your physical and mental needs.) And, indeed, We sent (Our first Prophet), Noah to his people and he said, "O My people! Serve Allah. You have no god other than Him. Will you not then be mindful of Him and walk aright?"
Maulana AliAnd certainly We sent Noah to his people, so he said: O my people, serve Allah, you have no God other than Him. Will you not guard against evil?
Free MindsAnd We have sent Noah to his people, so he said: "O my people, serve God, you have no other god besides Him. Will you not take heed?"
Qaribullah We sent Noah to his nation. 'Worship Allah, my nation, ' he said, 'for you have no god except He. Will you not be cautious? '

George SaleWe sent Noah heretofore unto his people, and he said, O my people, serve God: Ye have no God besides Him; will ye not therefore fear the consequence of your worshipping other gods?
JM RodwellWe sent Noah heretofore unto his people, and he said, "O my people! serve God: ye have no other God than He: will ye not therefore fear Him?

AsadAND, INDEED, We sent forth Noah unto his people and he said: [Sc., "who had lost sight of all the multiform evidence of the Creator's uniqueness and, thus, all gratitude for the innumerable blessings which He bestows upon man".] "O my people! Worship God alone]: you have no deity other than Him. Will you not, then, become conscious of Him?"



al-Mu'minun 023:024

23:24 فقال الملؤا الذين كفروا من قومه ماهذا الا بشر مثلكم يريد ان يتفضل عليكم ولو شاء الله لانزل ملائكة ماسمعنا بهذا في ابائنا الاولين


TransliterationFaqala almalao allatheena kafaroo min qawmihi ma hatha illa basharun mithlukum yureedu an yatafaddala AAalaykum walaw shaa Allahu laanzala mala-ikatan ma samiAAna bihatha fee aba-ina al-awwaleena
LiteralSo said the nobles/assembly from those who disbelieved from his nation: "That (is) not except a human similar to you he wants that (he) makes himself more preferred/favoured on (to) you, and if God willed/wanted , He would have descended angels, we did not hear with that in our fathers/forefathers, the first/beginners."

Yusuf AliThe chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old."
PickthalBut the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: This is only a mortal like you who would make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels. We heard not of this in the case of our fathers of old.
Arberry Said the Council of the unbelievers of his people, 'This is naught but a mortal like yourselves, who desires to gain superiority over you. And if God willed, He would have sent down angels. We never heard of this among, our fathers, the ancients.
ShakirAnd the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: He is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who desires that he may have superiority over you, and if Allah had pleased, He could certainly have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our fathers of yore:
SarwarThe chiefs of the unbelievers said to the others, "He is a mere mortal like you. He wants only to be superior to you. Had God wanted He would have sent the angels (instead of him). We have never heard from our fathers anything like what he says.
KhalifaThe leaders who disbelieved among his people said, "This is no more than a human like you, who wants to gain prominence among you. Had GOD willed, He could have sent down angels. We never heard of anything like this from our ancestors.
Hilali/KhanBut the chiefs of those who disbelieved among his people said: "He is no more than a human being like you, he seeks to make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing among our fathers of old.
H/K/SaheehBut the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allah had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.
MalikThe chiefs of the unbelievers among his people said, "Noah is but a human like you, he desires to assert his superiority over you. If Allah wanted to send Messengers, He could have sent down angels, we have never heard such a thing as he says from our forefathers."[24]
QXPBut the leaders among his community who refused to acknowledge the Truth, said, "This is only a man like you who wants to become prominent among you. God could have sent angels if He willed (to convey a message to us). We never heard this from our forefathers.
Maulana AliBut the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said: He is nothing but a mortal like yourselves, who desires to have superiority over you. And if Allah had pleased, He could have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our fathers of yore.
Free MindsBut the leaders who rejected from among his people said: "What is this but a human like you? He wants to make himself better than you! And if it was indeed God's will, He would have sent down Angels. We did not hear such a thing among our fathers of old."
Qaribullah The unbelieving assembly of his nation said: 'This is but a human like you, who desires to gain superiority over you. Had Allah willed, He could have sent down angels. We never heard of this among our ancient forefathers.

George SaleAnd the chiefs of his people, who believed not, said, this is no other than a man, as ye are: He seeketh to raise himself to a superiority over you. If God had pleased to have sent a messenger unto you, He would surely have sent angels: We have not heard this of our forefathers.
JM RodwellBut the chiefs of the people who believed not said, "This is but a man like yourselves: he fain would raise himself above you: but had it pleased God to send, He would have sent angels: We heard not of this with our sires of old;-

AsadBut the great ones among his people, who refused to acknowledge the truth, replied: "This [man] is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who wants to make himself superior to you! For, if God had willed [to convey a message unto us], He would surely have sent down angels; [moreover,] we have never heard [anything like] this from our forebears of old! [Lit., "in connection with (fi) our early forebears" - a Quranic allusion to the fact that people often reject a new ethical proposition on no better grounds than that, it conflicts with their "inherited" habits of thought and ways of life. Indirectly, this allusion implies a condemnation of all blind taqlid, i.e., an unthinking acceptance of religious doctrines or assertions, which are not unequivocally supported by divine revelation, the explicit teachings of a prophet, or the evidence of unprejudiced reason.]



al-Mu'minun 023:025

23:25 ان هو الا رجل به جنة فتربصوا به حتى حين


TransliterationIn huwa illa rajulun bihi jinnatun fatarabbasoo bihi hatta heenin
LiteralThat he is except a man with him (is) insanity, so wait with him until a time .

Yusuf Ali(And some said): "He is only a man possessed: wait (and have patience) with him for a time."
PickthalHe is only a man in whom is a madness, so watch him for a while.
Arberry He is naught but a man bedevilled; so wait on him for a time.
ShakirHe is only a madman, so bear with him for a time.
SarwarHe is only an insane person. Wait for some time. Perhaps he will come to his senses."
Khalifa"He is simply a man gone crazy. Just ignore him for awhile."
Hilali/Khan"He is only a man in whom is madness, so wait for him a while."
H/K/SaheehHe is not but a man possessed with madness, so wait concerning him for a time.
MalikSome of them said: "He is just a madman, so bear with him for a while."[25]
QXPHe is nothing but a madman, so watch him for a while."
Maulana AliHe is only a madman, so bear with him for a time.
Free Minds"He is no more than a man who has madness in him. So keep watch on him for a while."
Qaribullah He is nothing else except a man who is mad, so watch him for awhile.

George SaleVerily he is no other than a man disturbed with frenzy: Wherefore wait concerning him for a time.
JM RodwellVerily he is but a man possessed; leave him alone therefore for a time."

AsadHe is nothing but a madman: so bear with him for a while."



al-Mu'minun 023:026

23:26 قال رب انصرني بما كذبون


TransliterationQala rabbi onsurnee bima kaththabooni
LiteralHe said: "My Lord, give me victory/aid because (of) what they denied me ."

Yusuf Ali(Noah) said: "O my Lord! help me: for that they accuse me of falsehood!"
PickthalHe said: My Lord! Help me because they deny me.
Arberry He said, 'O my Lord, help me, for that they cry me lies.'
ShakirHe said: O my Lord! help me against their calling me a liar.
SarwarNoah prayed, "Lord, help me; they have called me a liar".
KhalifaHe said, "My Lord, grant me victory, for they have disbelieved me."
Hilali/Khan(Nooh (Noah)) said: "O my Lord! Help me because they deny me."
H/K/Saheeh[Noah] said, My Lord, support me because they have denied me.
MalikNoah said, "O my Lord! Help me against their calling me a liar."[26]
QXPSaid he, "My Lord! Help me, for they accuse me of lying."
Maulana AliHe said: My Lord, help me against their calling me a liar.
Free MindsHe said: "My Lord, grant me victory for what they denied me."
Qaribullah He (Noah) said: 'Lord, help me, for they belie me. '

George SaleNoah said, O Lord, do thou protect me; for that they accuse me of falsehood.
JM RodwellHe said, "O my Lord! help me against their charge of imposture."

AsadSaid [Noah]: "O my Sustainer! Succour me against their accusation of lying!"



al-Mu'minun 023:027

23:27 فاوحينا اليه ان اصنع الفلك باعيننا ووحينا فاذا جاء امرنا وفار التنور فاسلك فيها من كل زوجين اثنين واهلك الا من سبق عليه القول منهم ولاتخاطبني في الذين ظلموا انهم مغرقون


TransliterationFaawhayna ilayhi ani isnaAAi alfulka bi-aAAyunina wawahyina fa-itha jaa amruna wafara alttannooru faosluk feeha min kullin zawjayni ithnayni waahlaka illa man sabaqa AAalayhi alqawlu minhum wala tukhatibnee fee allatheena thalamoo innahum mughraqoona
LiteralSo We inspired/transmitted to him: "That produce/manufacture the ship/ships with Our eyes/sights, and Our inspiration/revelation , so if Our order/command came, and the furnace/kiln/elten'noor boiled over/gushed, so enter/pass in it from every/each pair/couple two, and your family/people , except whom the words preceded on him from them, and do not address/converse with Me in (about) those who were unjust/oppressive, that they are being drowned/sunken."
