Surah “Women”

as rendered by The Wise Quran Project — 176 verses

4:1
O mankind! Fear your Lord, the one who created you from one soul and He created from it its mate and He dispersed many men and women from both of them. And fear God, the one of whom you question one another, and the wombs; indeed, God is watchful over you.
4:2
And give the orphans their wealth and do not exchange the bad with the good and do not consume their wealth to your wealth; indeed, it is a great sin.
4:3
And if you fear that you will not be just concerning the orphans, then marry what pleases you among the women, two and three and four; but then if you fear that you will not be equitable, then one or what your right hands possess. That is nearer that you do not deviate.
4:4
And give the women their dowers, a gift, then if they gladly give up anything of it to you, then consume it with good wholesome digestion.
4:5
And do not give the fools your wealth which God made as sustenance for you; and provide for them with it and clothe them and say good speech to them.
4:6
And test the orphans until when they reach marriage, then if you perceive rectitude from them, then hand-over their wealth to them, and do not consume it in extravagance and in haste that they will grow. And whoever is rich, then let him abstain; and whoever is needy, then let him consume with goodness. Then when you hand-over their wealth to them, then call witnesses against them; and God has sufficed for a reckoner.
4:7
For the men a portion of what the parents and the nearer relatives left, and for the women a portion of what the parents and the nearer relatives left, of what is little of it or much, an allocated portion.
4:8
And when the relatives and the orphans and the poor are present at the division, then provide for them from it and say good speech to them.
4:9
And let those fear who if they had left behind them weak offspring, they would have feared for them, so let them fear God and let them say pertinent speech.
Indeed, those who consume the wealth of the orphans in injustice, they only consume fire in their bellies and soon they will burn in a blaze.
God instructs you concerning your children. For the male the like of the portion of the two females; but then if there are women, above two, then for them two thirds of what he left; and if there is one, then for her the half. And for his parents, for each one of them the sixth of what he left, if he has a child; but then if he has no child, and his parents are his heirs, then for his mother the third. Then if he has siblings, then for his mother the sixth, after a bequest he bequeaths with it or a debt. Your parents and your children, you do not know which of them is nearer in profit to you. An ordinance from God; indeed, God is knowing, wise.
And for you half of what your wives left, if they have no child; but then if they have a child, then for you the fourth of what they left, after a bequest they bequeath with it or a debt. And for them the fourth of what you left, if you have no child; but then if you have a child, then for them the eighth of what you left, after a bequest you bequeath with it or a debt. And if a man is to be inherited in remote inheritance, or a woman, and he has a brother or a sister, then for each one of both of them the sixth; but then if they are more than that, then they are partners in the third, after a bequest bequeathed with it or a debt, not harming. An instruction from God; and God is knowing, clement.
Those are the limits of God and whoever obeys God and His messenger, He will make him enter gardens beneath which the rivers flow, to dwell forever in it; and that is the great success.
And whoever rebels against God and His messenger and transgresses His limits, He will make him enter fire, to dwell forever in it; and for him is shameful punishment.
And those who commit the immorality among your women, then call witnesses against them, four among you, then if they testify, then keep them in the houses until death causes them to die or God makes a way for them.
And the two who commit it among you, then annoy both of them, then if they both repent and they both reform, then turn away from both of them; indeed, God is relenting, compassionate.
The relenting is only upon God for those who do evil in ignorance, then they repent soon. So those, God relents upon them; and God is knowing, wise.
And the relenting is not for those who do the evil deeds until when death is present with one of them, he says, 'Indeed I, I have repented now,' nor those who die while they are disbelievers. Those, We have prepared a painful punishment for them.
O those who believed! It is not lawful for you to inherit the women forcedly. And do not prevent them, that you may take away some of what you gave them, except that they commit manifest immorality. And associate with them with goodness, so if you are averse to them, then it may be that you are averse to a thing and God put much good in it.
And if you desire to substitute a wife in place of a wife, and you gave one of them a quintar, then do not take anything from it. Would you take it in clear slander and sin?
And how can you take it while certainly, some of you have come to some and they have taken a strong covenant from you?
And do not marry what your fathers married among the women, except what certainly is past; indeed, it is an immorality and hateful and evil a way.
Forbidden to you are your mothers, and your daughters, and your sisters, and your paternal aunts, and your maternal aunts, and the daughters of your brother, and the daughters of your sister, and your mothers, the ones who suckled you, and your sisters from the suckling, and the mothers of your women, and your stepdaughters, the ones who are in your guardianship, from your women, the ones whom you have entered, but then if you have not entered them, then there is no crime against you, and the wives of your sons, those who are from your loins, and that you gather together the two sisters, except what certainly is past, indeed, God is forgiving, compassionate,
And the married among the women, except what your right hands possess, the book of God against you. And made lawful to you is what is beyond that, to seek with your wealth, marrying not fornicating; so what you enjoyed from them, then give them their payments, an ordinance; and there is no crime against you concerning what you agree after the ordinance; indeed, God is knowing, wise.
And whoever among you is not able in power to marry the chaste believing women, then from what your right hands possess of your maids, the believers. And God knows best your faith, some of you are from some, so marry them with the permission of their family and give them their payments with goodness, married not fornicating and not taking intimate friends. Then when they are married, then if they commit immorality, then upon them is half of what is upon the chaste women of the punishment. That is for whoever feared the distress among you; and to be patient is better for you. And God is forgiving, compassionate.
God desires to make clear to you and to guide you to the courses of those who were before you, and to relent on you; and God is knowing, wise.
And God desires to relent on you; and those who follow the desires desire that you deviate, a great deviation.
God desires to lighten for you; and man was created weak.
O those who believed! Do not consume your wealth with falsehood between you, except that there is commerce from mutual consent among you. And do not kill yourselves; indeed, God is compassionate with you.
And whoever does that in enmity and injustice, then soon, We will burn him in fire; and that is easy for God.
If you avoid the great of what you are forbidden from, We will cover from you your evil deeds and We will make you enter a noble entrance.
And do not wish for what God gave some of you preference over some with. For the men a portion of what they earned and for the women a portion of what they earned; and ask God of His grace; indeed, God knows everything.
And for all We have made heirs of what the parents and the nearer relatives left; and those who your oaths have joined, then give them their portion; indeed, God is a witness over everything.
The men are custodians of the women because God gave some of them preference over some and because they spend of their wealth. So the righteous women are obedient, guardians for the unseen of what God guarded. And those who you fear their hostility, then admonish them and avoid them in the beds and strike them, then if they obey you, then do not seek a way against them; indeed, God is high, great.
And if you fear schism between both of them, then send an arbitrator from his family and an arbitrator from her family. If they both desire reconciliation, God will reconcile between them; indeed, God is knowing, aware.
And serve God and do not associate anything with Him. And with the parents, goodness, and with the relative, and the orphans, and the poor, and the neighbour who is a relative, and the neighbour who is a stranger, and the companion by the side, and the wayfarer, and what your right hands possess. Indeed, God does not love one who is an arrogant boaster,
Those who are stingy and bid mankind stinginess and conceal what God gave them of His grace; and We have prepared a shameful punishment for the disbelievers.
And those who spend their wealth in eyeservice of mankind and do not believe in God nor in the Last Day, and whoever the devil is for him a companion, then evil a companion.
And what would be against them if they had believed in God and the Last Day and spent of what God provided them? And God knows them.
Indeed, God does not wrong an atom’s weight; and if it is a good deed, He doubles it and He gives a great reward from Him.
So how when We bring a witness from each nation, and We bring you, a witness against these?
On that day those who disbelieved and rebelled against the messenger would wish if only the earth were levelled with them; and they cannot conceal a story from God.
O those who believed! Do not draw near the prayer while you are intoxicated, until you know what you say, nor in a state of impurity, except passing of a way, until you bathe. And if you are sick or on a journey or one of you came from the toilet or you touched the women, then you did not find water, then aim at good ground, then wipe your faces and your hands; indeed, God is pardoning, forgiving.
Did you not look at those who have been given a portion of the book? They buy error and they desire that you go astray from the way.
And God knows best your enemies and God has sufficed for a patron and God has sufficed for a helper.
Among those who became Jews, they distort the word from its positions, and they say, 'We have heard and we have rebelled,' and 'Hear not made to hear,' and 'Observe us,' twisting with their tongues and defaming the religion. And if that they had said: 'We have heard and we have obeyed,' and 'Hear,' and 'Look at us,' surely it would have been better for them and most straight; but God cursed them in their disbelief, so they do not believe, except a few.
O those who have been given the book! Believe in what We sent down, a verifier for what is with you, before that We efface faces, then return them upon their backs or We curse them like We cursed the fellows of the Sabbath. And the command of God is to be done.
Indeed, God does not forgive that partners be associated with Him; and He forgives whom He wills what is besides that. And whoever associates partners with God, then certainly, he has forged a great sin.
Did you not look at those who attribute purity to themselves? Nay, God purifies whom He wills and they will not be wronged a filament.
See how they forge the lie against God and it has sufficed for a clear sin.
Did you not look at those who have been given a portion of the book? They believe in Al jibt and Al taghut and they say of those who disbelieved, 'These are better guided in way than those who believed.'
Those are the ones whom God has cursed and whoever God curses, then you will not find a helper for him.
Or they have a portion of the kingdom? So, then they would not give mankind the dent on a date-seed.
Or they envy mankind over what God gave them of His grace? Then certainly, We gave the family of Abraham the book and wisdom, and We gave them a great kingdom.
Then among them is one who believed in it, and among them is one who hindered from it; and hell has sufficed for a blaze.
Indeed, those who disbelieved in Our signs, soon We will burn them in fire; whenever their skins are well done, We will change them to skins other than them, that they may taste the punishment. Indeed, God is mighty, wise.
And those who believed and did the good works, soon We will make them enter gardens beneath which the rivers flow, to dwell forever in it, forever; for them in it are purified spouses, and We will make them enter a shady shade.
Indeed, God commands you to render the trusts to their owner; and when you judge between mankind, to judge with equity. Indeed, God, excellent is what He admonishes you with; indeed God is hearing, seeing.
O those who believed! Obey God and obey the messenger and the possessors of the command among you, then if you contend with one another concerning anything, then refer it to God and the messenger, if you believe in God and the Last Day; that is good and better in interpretation.
Did you not look at those who claim that they have believed in what was sent down to you and what was sent down before you? They desire to appeal to Al taghut for judgment, and certainly, they were commanded to disbelieve in it; and the devil desires to cause them to err, a far error.
And when it is said to them, 'Come to what God has sent down and to the messenger,' you see the hypocrites turning away from you, turning away.
So how when a calamity befalls them for what their hands have sent forward? Then they will come to you swearing by God, 'We desired not except goodness and reconciliation.'
Those are the ones who God knows what is in their hearts. So turn away from them and admonish them, and say deep speech to them concerning their souls.
And We have not sent a messenger except that he may be obeyed with the permission of God; and if that they, when they wronged their souls, had come to you, then sought God’s forgiveness and the messenger sought forgiveness for them, surely they would have found God relenting, compassionate.
So no, by your Lord, they will not believe, until they make you the judge concerning what occurs between them, then they find no straitness in their souls from what you decided and they submit, in submission.
And if that We had prescribed to them that, 'Kill yourselves' or 'Go forth from your homes,' they would not have done it, except a few of them; and if they had done what they were admonished with, surely it would have been better for them, and more intense in strengthening.
And then, surely, We would have given them a great reward from Us,
And surely We would have guided them to a straight way.
And whoever obeys God and the messenger, then those are with those whom God bestowed favour on, among the prophets and the truthful and the witnesses and the righteous; and good are those companions.
That is the grace of God, and God has sufficed for a knower.
O those who believed! Take your precaution; then go forth into battle in companies or go forth into battle all together.
And indeed, among you is surely one who surely, definitely delays, then if a calamity befalls you, he says, 'Certainly, God has bestowed favour on me, since I was not a witness with them.'
And surely, if grace from God befalls you, he would surely, definitely say, as if there were no love between you and him, 'O I wish I had been with them, then I would have attained great success!'
So let those fight in the way of God who sell the worldly life for the hereafter; and whoever fights in the way of God, then is killed or overcomes, then soon We will give him a great reward.
And what ails you, you do not fight in the way of God and those who are deemed weak among the men and the women and the children, those who say, 'Our Lord! Bring us forth from this town, the wrongdoers are its people; and appoint a patron for us from You and appoint a helper for us from You.’?
Those who believed fight in the way of God and those who disbelieved fight in the way of Al taghut. So fight the patrons of the devil, indeed, the plot of the devil is weak.
Did you not look at those to whom it was said, 'Restrain your hands and be steadfast in the prayer and give the alms,' then when the fight was prescribed to them, then a party of them fear mankind like the fear of God or a more intense fear? And they said, 'Our Lord! Why have You prescribed the fight to us? If only You would defer us to a near term.' Say, 'The enjoyment of the world is little and the hereafter is better for one who feared; and you will not be wronged a filament.'
Wherever you are death will overtake you, even if you are in lofty towers. And if good befalls them, they say, 'This is from God,' and if evil befalls them, they say, 'This is from you.' Say, 'All is from God.' So what ails these people they can almost not understand a story?
What befell you of good, then from God; and what befell you of evil, then from yourself. And We have sent you, a messenger to mankind; and God has sufficed for a witness.
Whoever obeys the messenger, then certainly, he has obeyed God; and whoever has turned away, then We have not sent you as a guardian over them.
And they say, 'Obedience.' Then when they come forth from you, a party of them brood by night over other than that which you say; and God writes what they brood by night over. So turn away from them and rely on God; and God has sufficed for a trustee.
So do they not ponder the Quran? And if it had been from other than God, surely, they would have found much disagreement in it.
And when an affair of safety or fear comes to them, they spread it; and if they had referred it to the messenger and to the possessors of the command among them, those among them who devise surely would have known it. And if not for the grace of God upon you and His mercy surely you would have followed the devil except a few.
So fight in the way of God; do not task except yourself; and urge the believers, it may be God, that He will restrain the strength of those who disbelieved. And God is stronger in strength and more severe in exemplary punishment.
Whoever intercedes a good intercession there will be for him a portion of it; and whoever intercedes an evil intercession there will be for him a portion of it; and God is a nourisher over everything.
And when you are greeted with a greeting, then greet with better than it or return it; indeed, God is a reckoner over everything.
God, there is no god but He. He will surely, definitely gather you together to the Day of Resurrection, there is no doubt concerning it; and who is truer than God in speech?
So what ails you concerning the hypocrites, two troops, while God has overturned them for what they earned? Do you desire to guide one whom God has caused to go astray? And whoever God causes to go astray, then you will not find a way for him.
They wished if only you would disbelieve like they have disbelieved, then you would be equal; so do not take patrons of them until they emigrate in the way of God; so if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them. And do not take a patron of them nor a helper.
Except those who reach people who between you and them is a covenant or they came to you their breasts restrained to fight you or fight their people. And if God had willed, surely, He would have given them authority over you, then surely, they would have fought you. So if they withdraw from you, then do not fight you and they offer to you the peace, then God has not made a way for you against them.
Soon you will find others desiring to be safe from you and safe from their people; whenever they return to the trial, they are overturned in it. So if they do not withdraw from you and offer to you the peace and restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them. And those, We have made clear authority for you against them.
And it is not for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. And whoever has killed a believer by mistake, then freeing of a believing neck and blood-money delivered to his family except that they give charity. Then if he was from enemy people to you and he was a believer, then freeing of a believing neck. And if he was from people who between you and them is a covenant, then blood-money delivered to his family and freeing of a believing neck. So whoever did not find, then fasting of two consecutive months. A repentance from God; and God is knowing, wise.
And whoever kills a believer purposely, then his recompense is hell, to dwell forever in it; and God is angry with him and He has cursed him and He has prepared a great punishment for him.
O those who believed! When you travel in the way of God, then investigate and do not say to one who offers to you the peace, 'You are not a believer,' seeking the goods of the worldly life, so with God are many spoils. Thus you were before, then God bestowed favour on you. So investigate; indeed, God is aware of what you do.
Not equal are those who sit among the believers, other than the possessors of harm, and those who strive in the way of God with their wealth and their souls. God gave those who strive with their wealth and their souls preference over those who sit in degrees. And all God has promised the best. And God gave those who strive preference over those who sit, a great reward;
Degrees from him, and forgiveness and mercy; and God is forgiving, compassionate.
Indeed, those whom the angels caused to die wronging their souls, they said, 'In what were you?’ They said, 'We were deemed weak in the earth,' They said, 'Was the earth of God not spacious so you could emigrate in it?' So those, their refuge is hell and evil a destination.
Except those who are deemed weak among the men and the women and the children who are not able to maneuver and are not guided to a way;
So those, it may be God, that He will pardon them; and God is pardoning, forgiving.
And whoever emigrates in the way of God will find in the earth many a place of refuge and abundance; and whoever comes forth from his house an emigrant to God and His messenger, then death overtakes him, then certainly, his reward has fallen on God; and God is forgiving, compassionate.
And when you travel in the earth, then there is no crime against you to shorten some of the prayer, if you fear that those who disbelieved will try you. Indeed, the disbelievers are a clear enemy to you.
And when you are among them, then you hold the prayer for them, then let a party of them stand with you and let them take their weapons, then when they have prostrated, then let them be behind you and let the other party which did not pray come, then let them pray with you and let them take their precaution and their weapons. Those who disbelieved wished if only you are heedless of your weapons and your baggage, then they would be hostile to you, one hostility. And there is no crime against you if with you is an annoyance of rain or you are sick, to set down your weapons. And take your precaution; indeed, God has prepared a shameful punishment for the disbelievers.
Then when you complete the prayer, then remember God standing and sitting and on your sides, then when you are at ease, then be steadfast in the prayer; indeed, the prayer is prescribed, scheduled upon the believers.
And do not lose courage in the seeking of the people. If you are in pain, then indeed they, they are in pain like you are in pain. And you hope for from God what they do not hope for; and God is knowing, wise.
Indeed, We have sent down to you the book with the truth that you may judge between mankind with what God showed you. And do not be a litigant for the treacherous.
And seek God's forgiveness; indeed, God is forgiving, compassionate.
And do not argue for those who deceive themselves; indeed, God does not love one who is a sinful traitor.
They hide from mankind and they cannot hide from God. And He is with them when they brood by night over what He is not pleased with of the speech; and God encompasses what they do.
Here you are, these, you argued for them in the worldly life, so who will argue with God for them on the Day of Resurrection? Or who will be a trustee over them?
And whoever does evil or wrongs his soul, then seeks God's forgiveness, he will find God forgiving, compassionate;
And whoever earns sin, then he only earns it against his soul; and God is knowing, wise.
And whoever earns a crime or a sin then accuses an innocent of it, then certainly, he has borne slander and a clear sin.
And if not for the grace of God upon you and His mercy, surely, a party of them planned to cause you to go astray; and they do not cause to go astray except themselves; and they will not harm you anything. And God has sent down the book and wisdom to you and He has taught you what you did not know; and the grace of God upon you is great.
There is no good in much of their secret discourse; except for one who bids charity or goodness or reconciliation between mankind; and whoever does that seeking the pleasure of God, then soon We will give him a great reward.
And whoever splits from the messenger after the guidance became clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers, We will turn him to what he turned away to; and We will burn him in hell and evil a destination.
Indeed, God does not forgive that partners be associated with Him; and He forgives whom He wills what is besides that. And whoever associates partners with God, then certainly, he has erred a far error.
They call besides Him not except on females; and they call not except on a rebellious devil.
God cursed him and he said, 'I will surely, definitely take from your servants an allocated portion;
And I will surely, definitely cause them to go astray; and I will surely, definitely make them hope; and I will surely, definitely command them, then they will surely, definitely cut off the ears of the cattle; and I will surely, definitely command them, then they will surely, definitely change the creation of God.’ And whoever takes the devil for a patron besides God, then certainly, he has lost, a clear loss.
He promises them and he makes them hope; and the devil promises them not except deception.
Those, their refuge is hell; and they will not find a place of refuge from it.
And those who believed and did the good works, soon We will make them enter gardens beneath which the rivers flow, to dwell forever in it, forever. The promise of God is true; and who is truer than God in speech?
Not for your wishes nor the wishes of the people of the book. Whoever does evil will be recompensed with it and he will not find a patron nor a helper for him besides God.
And whoever does of the good works, of male or female, and he is a believer, then those will enter the garden and they will not be wronged the dent on a date-seed.
And who is better in religion than one who has submitted his face to God and he is a good-doer and he has followed the religion of Abraham, upright? And God took Abraham as a friend.
And for God is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth; and God encompasses everything.
They seek your counsel concerning the women. Say, 'God counsels you concerning them and what is recited to you in the book concerning the orphans of the women, the ones whom you do not give what was prescribed for them and you desire to marry them and those who are deemed weak among the children and that you stand for the orphans with justice. And what you do of good, then indeed, God knows it.
And if a wife fears hostility or shunning from her husband, then there is no crime against both of them that they make peace between them, reconciliation. And reconciliation is good. And the souls have been supplied with covetousness. And if you do good and fear, then indeed, God is aware of what you do.
And you will not be able to be equitable between the women, even if you are eager, but then do not incline all the inclination, then leave her like the suspended one. And if you reconcile and fear, then indeed, God is forgiving, compassionate.
And if they both separate, God will enrich each from His abundance; and God is immense, wise.
And for God is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. And surely, certainly We have instructed those who were given the book before you and you to fear God. And if you disbelieve, then indeed, for God is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth; and God is free of need, praiseworthy.
And for God is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth; and God has sufficed for a trustee.
If He wills He could remove you, O mankind! And bring others; and God is powerful over that.
Whoever desires the reward of the world, then with God is the reward of the world and the hereafter; and God is hearing, seeing.
O those who believed! Be custodians of justice, witnesses for God even if against yourselves or the parents and the nearer relatives, if he be rich or needy, so God is more worthy of both of them. So do not follow lust, lest you deviate; and if you pervert or you turn away, then indeed, God is aware of what you do.
O those who believed! Believe in God and His messenger and the book, the one which He sent down to His messenger, and the book, the one which He sent down before; and whoever disbelieves in God and His angels and His books and His messengers and the Last Day, then certainly, he has erred, a far error.
Indeed, those who believed, then disbelieved, then believed, then disbelieved, then increased in disbelief, God would not forgive them nor guide them to a way.
Give the hypocrites glad tidings because for them is a painful punishment.
Those who take the disbelievers as patrons besides the believers, do they seek honour with them? So indeed, honour is altogether for God.
And certainly, He sent down to you in the book that when you hear of the signs of God, disbelieving in it and mocking it, then do not sit with them until they plunge into vain discourse about a story other than it. Indeed, you then are like them. Indeed, God will gather together the hypocrites and the disbelievers in hell all together.
Those who wait for you, then if you have victory from God, they say, 'Were we not with you?' And if there is a chance for the disbelievers, they say, 'Did we not gain the mastery over you?’ And ‘We protected you from the believers.' So God will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection; and God will not make a way for the disbelievers against the believers.
Indeed, the hypocrites try to deceive God, and He is deceiving them. And when they stand towards the prayer, they stand lazy, doing eyeservice to mankind and they do not remember God, except a little;
Vacillating between that, not to these nor to these. And whoever God causes to go astray, then you will not find a way for him.
O those who believed! Do not take the disbelievers as patrons besides the believers. Do you desire to make for God a clear authority against you?
Indeed, the hypocrites are in the lowest, the bottom level of the fire and you will not find a helper for them.
Except those who repented and reformed and took tight hold of God and are sincere to God in their religion; then those are with the believers. And soon God will give the believers a great reward.
What has God to do with your punishment, if you are thankful and you believe? And God is thankful, knowing.
God does not love the publicity with the evil of the speech, except one who has been wronged; and God is hearing, knowing.
If you disclose good or you conceal it or you pardon evil, then indeed, God is pardoning, powerful.
Indeed, those who disbelieve in God and His messengers and desire to make a distinction between God and His messengers and say, 'We believe in some and we disbelieve in some,' and desire to take a way between that,
Those, they are the disbelievers in truth; and We have prepared a shameful punishment for the disbelievers.
And those who believed in God and His messengers and did not make a distinction between any one of them, those, soon He will give them their rewards; and God is forgiving, compassionate.
The people of the book ask you to bring down a book to them from the heaven. So certainly, they asked Moses greater than that, so they said, 'Show us God openly,' then the thunderbolt seized them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf after the clear proofs came to them, then We pardoned that and We gave Moses clear authority.
And We raised the mount above them at their covenant. And We said to them, 'Enter the gate prostrating.' And We said to them, 'Do not transgress concerning the Sabbath.' And We took a strong covenant from them.
So because of their breaking their covenant and their disbelief in the signs of God and their killing the prophets without right and their saying, 'Our hearts are uncircumcised,' nay, God has set a seal upon them for their disbelief, so they do not believe, except a few,
And for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander.
And their saying, 'Indeed we, we killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of God.' And they killed him not nor crucified him, but it was made similar to them. And indeed, those who disagreed concerning it are surely in doubt of it. They have no knowledge of it, except the following of conjecture. And they killed him not, certainly.
Nay, God raised him to Him; and God is mighty, wise.
And there is not among the people of the book except he will surely, definitely believe in him before his death; and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.
Then for the wrongdoing of those who became Jews We forbade to them good things made lawful for them. And for their hindering many from the way of God.
And their taking usury, and certainly, they were forbidden from it. And their consuming the wealth of mankind with falsehood. And We have prepared a painful punishment for the disbelievers among them.
But those who are firmly rooted in the knowledge among them and the believers believe in what was sent down to you and what was sent down before you, and those who are steadfast in the prayer and those who give the alms and those who believe in God and the Last Day, those, soon We will give them a great reward.
Indeed We, We have inspired to you like We inspired to Noah and the prophets after him; and We inspired to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon and We gave David the Psalms.
And messengers certainly We narrated them to you before and messengers We did not narrate them to you. And God spoke to Moses, speaking.
Messengers, announcers of glad tidings and warners, that there may not be argument for mankind against God after the messengers; and God is mighty, wise.
But God bears witness to what He sent down to you; He sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness; and God has sufficed for a witness.
Indeed, those who disbelieved and hindered from the way of God, certainly, they have erred, a far error.
Indeed, those who disbelieved and did wrong, God would not forgive them nor guide them to a way,
Except the way of hell, to dwell forever in it, forever; and that is easy for God.
O mankind! Certainly, the messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe, better for you. And if you disbelieve, then indeed, for God is what is in the heavens and the earth; and God is knowing, wise.
O people of the book! Do not exceed in your religion and do not say against God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is only a messenger of God and His word, He cast it to Mary and a spirit from Him; so believe in God and His messengers, and do not say 'Three.' Desist, better for you. God is only one god, glory be to Him that he be a son for Him. For Him is what is in the heavens and what is in the earth; and God has sufficed for a trustee.
The Messiah will not disdain to be a servant for God nor the angels, those who are brought near; and whoever disdains His service and is proud, then soon He will gather them to Him all together.
Then as for those who believed and did the good works, then He will pay them their rewards in full and give them more of His grace. And as for those who disdained and are proud, then He will punish them, a painful punishment, and they will not find a patron nor a helper for them besides God.
O mankind! Certainly, proof has come to you from your Lord and We have sent down to you a clear light.
So as for those who believed in God and took tight hold of Him, then soon He will make them enter into mercy from Him and grace; and He will guide them to a straight way to Him.
They seek your counsel. Say, 'God counsels you concerning the remote inheritance.' If a man dies, he has no child and he has a sister, then for her half of what he left; and he will be her heir, if she has no child. But then if they are two, then for them two thirds of what he left. And if they are siblings, men and women, then for the male the like of the portion of the two females. God makes clear to you, lest you go astray; and God knows everything.
