General Root Meaning
to arrange, set a thing in order, he kept or clave to it constantly and perseveringly, continue intently, they went round something, advance/approach it, withheld/detain/confined, to seclude oneself, remain/stay/dwell.
ya'kufuuna (imp. 3rd. m. pl.): they clung to.
'aakif (act. pic. m. sing.): inhabitant.
'aakifuuna / aakifiina (acc./ act. pic. pl.): those who are performing i'tikaaf.
ma'kuufan (pic. pac. acc.): detained, stopped.

  
l-ʿākifu   (1)

22:25
Indeed, those who disbelieved and hinder from (the) way (of) Allah and Al-Masjid Al-Haraam, which We made it for the mankind, equal, (are) the resident therein and the visitor; and whoever intends therein of deviation (or) wrongdoing, We will make him taste of a punishment painful.

He said, "Then go. And indeed, for you in the life that you will say, "(Do) not touch." And indeed, for you (is) an appointment never you will fail to (keep) it. And look at your god that which you have remained to it devoted. Surely we will burn it then certainly we will scatter it in the sea (in) particles."

When he said to his father and his people, "What (are) these [the] statues which you to it (are) devoted?"

2:187
Permitted for you (in the) nights (of) fasting (is) the approach to your wives. They (are) garments for you and you (are) garments for them. Knows Allah that you used to deceive yourselves, so He turned towards you and He forgave [on] you. So now have relations with them and seek what has ordained Allah for you. And eat and drink until becomes distinct to you the thread [the] white from the thread [the] black of [the] dawn. Then complete the fast till the night. And (do) not have relations with them while you (are) secluded in the masajid. These (are the) limits (set by) Allah, so (do) not approach them. Thus makes clear Allah His verses for [the] people so that they may (become) righteous.

They said, "Never we will cease to it being devoted to it until returns to us Musa."

26:71
They said, "We worship idols, so we will remain to them devoted."

  
maʿkūfan   (1)

48:25
They (are) those who disbelieved and hindered you from Al-Masjid Al-Haraam while the offering (was) prevented from reaching its place (of sacrifice). And if not (for) men believing and women believing not you knew them that you may trample them and would befall you from them any harm without knowledge. That may admit Allah to His Mercy whom He wills. If they had been apart surely, We would have punished those who disbelieved among them (with) a punishment painful.

And when We made the House a place of return for mankind and (a place of) security and (said), "Take [from] (the) standing place (of) Ibrahim, (as) a place of prayer." And We led across (the) Children (of) Israel the sea. Then they came upon a people devoted to idols of theirs. They said, "O Musa! Make for us a god like what they have gods. He said, "Indeed, you (are) a people ignorant.
