General Root Meaning
To grieve, to mourn/lament/moan, be sorrowful/sad/unhappy, cause a person grief or to be sad or unhappy or sorrowful, to be rough or rugged and hard [said of a place or the ground], also (said of a beast) to be rough in pace or not easy to ride upon, to read or recite with a slender and plaintive voice, use roughness with people, express pain/grief/sorrow.

And they (will) say, "All praises (be) to Allah the One Who (has) removed from us the sorrow. Indeed, our Lord (is) surely Oft-Forgiving, Most Appreciative,

When was going your sister and she said, "Shall, I show you [to] (one) who will nurse and rear him?" So We returned you to your mother that may be cooled her eyes and not she grieves. And you killed a man, but We saved you from the distress, and We tried you (with) a trial. Then you remained (some) years with (the) people (of) Madyan. Then you came at the decreed (time) O Musa!

28:13
So We restored him to his mother that might be comforted her eye, and not she may grieve and that she would know, that the Promise (of) Allah (is) true. But most of them (do) not know.

If not you help him, certainly, helped him Allah when drove him out those who disbelieved, the second (of) the two, when they both (were) in the cave, when he said to his companion, "(Do) not grieve, indeed, Allah (is) with us." Then sent down Allah His tranquility upon him, and supported him with forces not which you did see, and made (the) word (of) those who disbelieved the lowest, while (the) Word (of) Allah it (is) the highest. And Allah (is) All-Mighty, All-Wise.

15:88
(Do) not extend your eyes towards what We have bestowed with it (to) categories of them and (do) not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers.

And be patient and not (is) your patience but from Allah. And (do) not grieve over them and (do) not be in distress for what they plot.

O Messenger! Not let grieve you those who hasten in (to) [the] disbelief - of those who said, "We believe" with their mouths and not believe their hearts, and from those who (are) Jews. They (are) listeners to falsehood, (and) listeners for people other, (who have) not come to you. They distort the words from after their context, saying, "If you are given this [so] take it but if not you are given it then beware." And (for) whom intends Allah his trial, then never will you have power for him against Allah anything. Those (are) the ones never intends Allah that He purifies their hearts. For them in the world (is) disgrace and for them in the Hereafter (is) a punishment great.

You may defer whom you will of them or you may take to yourself whom you will. And whoever you desire of those whom you (had) set aside - then (there is) no blame upon you. That (is) more suitable that may be cooled their eyes and not they grieve and they maybe pleased with what you have given them - all of them. And Allah knows what (is) in your hearts. And is Allah All-Knower, Most Forbearing.
