General Root Meaning
To prevent or hinder or hold back, to impede/withhold/arrest/restrain, to keep/debar/preclude/inhibit, to forbid/prohibit/interdict, deny or refuse, also to protect or defend or guard a thing, dispute or contest, resist or withstand, to strengthen or fortify, to make a thing inaccessible or unapproachable or difficult of access.

21:43
Or have they gods (to) defend them from Us? Not they are able (to) help themselves and not they from Us can be protected.

  
māniʿatuhum   (1)

59:2
He (is) the One Who expelled those who disbelieved from (the) People (of) the Scripture from their homes at (the) first gathering. Not you think that they would leave, and they thought that [they] would defend them their fortresses against Allah. But came to them Allah from where not they expected, and He cast into their hearts [the] terror, they destroyed their houses with their hands and the hands (of) the believers. So take a lesson, O those endowed (with) insight!

Not it is for them that they enter them except (like) those in fear. For them in the world (is) disgrace and for them in the Hereafter (is) a punishment great.
