General Root Meaning
To make a place or thing plain or even or smooth, to prepare or establish, to gain or earn, seek to gain, to work for oneself, to spread or be spread (namely a bed).

For those who responded to their Lord (is) the bliss. Say to those who disbelieve[d], "You will be overcome and you will be gathered to Hell, [and] an evil [the] resting place.

And when I restrained (the) Children (of) Israel from you when you came to them with the clear proofs then said those who disbelieved among them "Not this but magic, clear."
