to seek the favour, seek the means of nearness/approach/access, honourable, rank, degree, affinity, tie, nearness, come closer.
   l-wasīlata   (2)

5:35
O you who believe! Fear Allah and seek towards Him the means and strive hard in His way, so that you may succeed.

17:57
Those whom they call, seek to their Lord the means of access, which of them (is) nearest, and they hope (for) His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, (the) punishment (of) your Lord is (ever) feared.
