Surah “Saba, Sheba”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 54 verses

All praise belongs to God, to whom belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth, and to Him belongs all praise in the Hereafter. He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.
He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it, what descends from the sky and what ascends into it. He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving.
Those who disbelieve say, "The Hour will never come to us." Say, "Yes, by my Lord, it will certainly come to you. He is the Knower of the unseen. Not even the weight of an atom escapes Him in the heavens or on earth, nor anything smaller than that or larger, except that it is in a clear record."
He will reward those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is forgiveness and generous provision.
Those who strive against Our verses, seeking to undermine them, for them is a punishment of painful torment.
Those who have been given knowledge see that what has been sent down to you from your Lord is the truth, and it guides to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.
Those who disbelieve say, "Shall we show you a man who claims that when you have completely disintegrated, you will be created anew?"
Has he invented a lie about God, or is he possessed? No, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are in torment and extreme error.
Do they not see what is before them and behind them of the sky and the earth? If We willed, We could cause the earth to swallow them or drop fragments from the sky upon them. In that is a sign for every servant who turns back to God.
We granted David favor from Us: "O mountains, echo praises with him, and the birds as well." We made iron soft for him.
"Make full coats of armor and measure the links precisely. Do righteous deeds, for I see everything you do."
To Solomon We subjected the wind: its morning course was a month's journey and its evening course was a month's journey. We made a spring of molten copper flow for him. Among the jinn were those who worked before him by his Lord's permission. Whoever among them deviated from Our command, We made him taste the punishment of the blazing Fire.
They made for him whatever he wished: sanctuaries, statues, basins like reservoirs, and firmly anchored cauldrons. "Work in gratitude, O family of David." But few of My servants are truly grateful.
When We decreed death for him, nothing alerted them to his death except a creature of the earth eating away at his staff. When he collapsed, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating labor.
There was a sign for Sheba in their homeland: two gardens, one on the right and one on the left. Eat from your Lord's provision and be grateful to Him. A good land and a forgiving Lord.
But they turned away, so We sent against them the flood of the dam and replaced their two gardens with two gardens bearing bitter fruit, tamarisk, and a few sparse lote trees.
That is how We repaid them for their ingratitude. Do We ever punish anyone but the ungrateful?
We placed between them and the towns We had blessed visible towns, and We measured out the journey between them. Travel through them by night and day in safety.
But they said, "Our Lord, make the distances between our journeys longer." They wronged themselves, so We made them cautionary tales and scattered them completely. In that are signs for everyone who is patient and grateful.
Iblis proved his assumption about them true, and they followed him, except for a group of believers.
He had no authority over them except that We might distinguish those who believe in the Hereafter from those who doubt it. Your Lord is Guardian over all things.
Say, "Call upon those you claim besides God. They do not possess even an atom's weight in the heavens or on earth, nor do they have any share in either, nor does He have any helper among them."
Intercession does not benefit anyone before Him except for those He permits. When terror is lifted from their hearts, they will ask, "What did your Lord say?" They will answer, "The truth." He is the Most High, the Greatest.
Say, "Who provides for you from the heavens and the earth?" Say, "God. Either we or you are upon guidance or in clear error."
Say, "You will not be asked about our sins, nor will we be asked about what you do."
Say, "Our Lord will gather us together, then He will judge between us with truth. He is the Judge, the All-Knowing."
Say, "Show me those you have joined with Him as partners." No! He is God, the Almighty, the Wise.
We have not sent you except to all of humanity as a bearer of good news and a warner, but most people do not know.
They say, "When will this promise come to pass, if you are truthful?"
Say, "You have an appointment on a Day that you cannot delay by a single hour, nor advance."
Those who disbelieve say, "We will never believe in this Quran, nor in what came before it." If only you could see when the wrongdoers are made to stand before their Lord, throwing blame back and forth at each other. Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, "If not for you, we would have been believers."
Those who were arrogant will say to those who were oppressed, "Did we turn you away from guidance after it came to you? No, you were criminals yourselves."
Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, "No, it was your scheming night and day, when you commanded us to disbelieve in God and set up rivals to Him." They will hide their regret when they see the punishment. We will place shackles around the necks of those who disbelieved. Are they repaid for anything except what they used to do?
We never sent a warner to any town without its affluent ones saying, "We reject what you have been sent with."
They said, "We have more wealth and children, and we will not be punished."
Say, "My Lord extends provision to whom He wills and restricts it, but most people do not know."
It is not your wealth or your children that bring you closer to Us. But whoever believes and does good, for them is a multiplied reward for what they did, and they will be safe in lofty chambers.
Those who strive against Our verses will be brought into punishment.
Say, "My Lord extends provision to whom He wills of His servants and restricts it for him. Whatever you spend, He will replace it. He is the best of providers."
On the Day He gathers them all together, then says to the angels, "Was it you these people used to worship?"
They will say, "Glory be to You! You are our protector, not them. No, they used to worship the jinn. Most of them believed in them."
Today none of you has power to benefit or harm another. We will say to those who wronged, "Taste the punishment of the Fire that you used to deny."
When Our clear verses are recited to them, they say, "This is just a man who wants to turn you away from what your fathers worshiped." They say, "This is nothing but a fabricated lie." Those who disbelieve say of the truth when it comes to them, "This is nothing but obvious magic."
We gave them no scriptures to study, and We sent them no warner before you.
Those before them also denied, and these have not attained even a tenth of what We gave them. They rejected My messengers, so how terrible was My condemnation.
Say, "I advise you with one thing only: that you stand before God, in pairs or alone, and then reflect. Your companion is not possessed. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment."
Say, "Whatever reward I might have asked of you, it is yours. My reward is only from God, and He is Witness over all things."
Say, "My Lord hurls the truth. He is the Knower of all that is hidden."
Say, "The truth has come, and falsehood can neither originate nor return."
Say, "If I stray, I stray only against my own soul. But if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me. He is All-Hearing, Ever Near."
If only you could see when they are seized with terror, with no escape, and they are snatched from a place nearby.
They will say, "We believe in it!" But how can they reach it from such a distant place?
They had rejected it before, casting accusations about the unseen from a distant place.
A barrier will be placed between them and what they desire, just as was done with their kind before. They were in disturbing doubt.
