Surah “The Ascending Stairways, The Ladders”

as rendered by The Wise Quran Project — 44 verses

A questioner asked of a punishment actually occurring
To the disbelievers; there is no repeller for it;
From God, the possessor of the stairways.
The angels and the spirit ascend to Him in a day, its measure is fifty thousand years.
So be patient, beautiful patience;
Indeed, they see it far,
And We see it near.
On the day the sky will be like molten brass,
And the mountains will be like wool,
And a close friend will not question a close friend;
They will be made to see them, the sinner will wish if he could ransom himself from the punishment of that day with his children,
And his female companion and his brother,
And his nearest kinsfolk, the one who sheltered him,
And whoever is in the earth, all together, then it could save him.
Not so, indeed, it is a flame,
Dragging much to the skin of the head,
Calling him who turned his back and turned away,
And collected and kept.
Indeed, man was created anxious.
When the evil touches him, impatient;
And when the good touches him, refuses to give;
Except those who pray,
Those who they are perpetually upon their prayer,
And those in whose wealth is a known right
For the one who asks and the one who is denied,
And those who verify the Day of Judgment,
And those who they are apprehensive of the punishment of their Lord;
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe;
And those who they are guardians to their private parts,
Except for their wives or what their right hands possess, then indeed, they are not blameworthy;
Then whoever seeks beyond that, then those, they are the transgressors;
And those who they are observers of their trusts and their covenant,
And those who they stand with their testimonies,
And those who they guard over their prayer.
Those are in gardens, honoured.
So what ails those who disbelieved, hurrying before you,
On the right and on the left, in groups?
Does every man among them desire to enter a garden of pleasure?
Not so, indeed We, We created them of what they know.
So I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests; indeed, We are surely able
To exchange with better than them, and We are not to be outrun.
So leave them to plunge into vain discourse and play until they meet their day which they are promised,
On the day they will come out swiftly from the graves, as if they were hastening to a standard,
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the day which they were promised.
