what befell you on the day the two armies met in battle happened with God’s permission and in order for Him to see who were the true believers and who were the hypocrites who
If you suffered when the two armies clashed, it happened according to Allah's Laws. He made it a test for the believers to know their strength and weakness
And, whatever (loss) you suffered on the day (when) the two armies met, was with the permission of Allah, in order that He might test the believers&mdash
What happened to you in [the confusion of] the clash between two armies [which led to your defeat in the battle of Ohud] was with the permission of God, and as a trial, in order to expose the hypocrites [Muslim by name.]

And the calamity that struck you on the day the two armies met, was by Allah’s command - and in order that He may make known the believers

What hit you the day the two armies met was by the permission of Allah, so that He might know the believer
And that which befell you, on the day when the two host met, was by ALLAH's command; and this was so that he might cause the believers to be distinguished
And that which befell you on the day when the two armies met (at Uhud), was so by the leave of Allah, and (it happened thus) so that He might distinguish the believers
And the agony that hurt you on the day when the two armies clashed with each other came about (only) by Allah’s command. And (this happened) so that Allah establishes the identity of the believers
And what you suffered (of the disaster) on the day (of the battle of Uhud when) the two armies met, was by the leave of Allah, in order that He might test the believers
And that which befel you on the day when the armies met, was certainly by the will of God, and that he might know the faithful, and that he might know the hypocrites! And when the word was "Advance, fight on the path of God, or drive back the foe," - they said, "Had we known how to fight, we would have followed you." Nearer were some of them on that day to unbelief, than to faith
What transpired at the battle of the two communities (the Battle of Uhud) was so that your essence, the Names of Allah, becomes apparent on the believers, and it becomes evident who each person (really) is.
