Surah “Ornaments of Gold, Luxury, The Embellishment”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 89 verses

Ha Mim.
By the clear Book.
We have made it an Arabic Quran so that you may understand.
It is in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.
Should We turn the Reminder away from you because you are a people who transgress all bounds?
How many prophets did We send to earlier peoples!
No prophet ever came to them without them mocking him.
So We destroyed those mightier than these in power, and the example of the ancients has passed.
If you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say, "The Almighty, the All-Knowing created them."
He who made the earth a cradle for you and made pathways in it for you, so that you may find your way.
He who sends down water from the sky in measured amounts, and with it We revive a dead land. Just like that, you will be brought forth.
He who created all the pairs and made for you ships and livestock on which you ride.
So that you may settle on their backs, then remember the blessing of your Lord when you are seated upon them and say, "Glory be to the One who has subjected this to us, for we could never have done it ourselves."
To our Lord we will surely return.
They have made some of His servants a part of Him. Truly, the human being is clearly ungrateful.
Has He taken daughters from what He creates while favoring you with sons?
When one of them is given news of what he attributes to the Most Merciful, his face darkens and he is filled with grief.
One who is raised amid ornaments and cannot argue clearly?
They have made the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.
They say, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshiped them." They have no knowledge of that. They are only guessing.
Or did We give them a book before this to which they are holding fast?
No, they say, "We found our fathers following a tradition, and we are guided in their footsteps."
Likewise, We never sent a warner to any town before you without its affluent ones saying, "We found our fathers following a tradition, and we are following in their footsteps."
He said, "Even if I bring you better guidance than what you found your fathers following?" They said, "We reject what you have been sent with."
So We took vengeance on them. See how the deniers met their end.
And when Abraham said to his father and his people, "I am free of what you worship."
"Except the One who created me, for He will guide me."
He made this a lasting word among his descendants, so they might return.
I gave these people and their forefathers enjoyment until the truth came to them and a clear messenger.
When the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and we reject it."
They said, "Why was this Quran not sent down to some great man from the two cities?"
Is it they who distribute your Lord's mercy? We have distributed their livelihoods among them in this worldly life and raised some of them above others in rank, so that some may employ others in service. Your Lord's mercy is better than what they accumulate.
Were it not that all people would become one community, We would have given those who deny the Most Merciful silver roofs for their houses and staircases to climb.
And doors for their houses and couches to recline on.
And gold ornaments. All of this is nothing but the enjoyment of this worldly life, but the Hereafter with your Lord is for those who are mindful of Him.
Whoever turns blind to the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We assign a devil to be his constant companion.
These devils block them from the path while they think they are guided.
Until he comes to Us and says, "If only there were between me and you the distance of the two easts! What a wretched companion!"
It will not benefit you today, since you did wrong, that you are partners in the punishment.
Can you make the deaf hear or guide the blind and those in clear error?
Whether We take you away, We will surely take vengeance on them.
Or We show you what We have promised them, for We have full power over them.
So hold firmly to what has been revealed to you. You are on a straight path.
It is a reminder for you and your people, and you will be questioned.
Ask those of Our messengers We sent before you: Did We ever appoint gods to be worshiped besides the Most Merciful?
We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said, "I am a messenger from the Lord of all worlds."
But when he came to them with Our signs, they laughed at them.
Every sign We showed them was greater than the one before it, and We seized them with punishment so they might return.
They said, "O sorcerer, call upon your Lord for us by the covenant He made with you, and we will surely be guided."
But when We lifted the punishment from them, they broke their word.
Pharaoh called out among his people, saying, "O my people, do I not possess the kingdom of Egypt, with these rivers flowing beneath me? Do you not see?"
"Am I not better than this contemptible man who can barely express himself?"
"Why have bracelets of gold not been placed upon him, or angels come with him as escorts?"
He made fools of his people, and they obeyed him. They were a sinful people.
When they provoked Our wrath, We took vengeance on them and drowned them all.
We made them a precedent and an example for later generations.
When the son of Mary was cited as an example, your people turned away from it in disgust.
They said, "Are our gods better, or is he?" They only cite him to argue with you. They are a quarrelsome people.
He was only a servant whom We blessed and made an example for the Children of Israel.
If We willed, We could have made angels from among you to succeed one another on earth.
He is a sign of the Hour, so have no doubt about it and follow Me. This is a straight path.
Do not let Satan turn you away. He is your clear enemy.
When Jesus came with clear proofs, he said, "I have come to you with wisdom and to clarify for you some of what you disagree about. So be mindful of God and obey me."
God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path.
But the factions among them differed. Woe to those who did wrong, from the punishment of a painful Day.
Are they waiting for anything but the Hour to come upon them suddenly while they are unaware?
Close friends on that Day will be enemies to one another, except those who were mindful of God.
O My servants, no fear will be upon you today, nor will you grieve.
Those who believed in Our signs and submitted.
Enter Paradise, you and your spouses, rejoicing.
Circulated among them will be plates of gold and cups. In it is whatever souls desire and eyes delight in. You will remain there forever.
This is the Paradise you have inherited for what you used to do.
In it you will have abundant fruit from which you will eat.
The criminals will remain in the punishment of Hell forever.
It will not be lightened for them, and they will be in despair within it.
We did not wrong them, but they were the wrongdoers.
They will cry out, "O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "You are staying."
We brought you the truth, but most of you despised the truth.
Or have they devised a plan? Then We too are devising.
Or do they think We cannot hear their secrets and private conversations? Yes, and Our messengers are with them, recording.
Say, "If the Most Merciful had a son, I would be the first to worship."
Glory be to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the Throne, far above what they describe.
So leave them to wade in falsehood and play until they meet their Day which they are promised.
He is the God in heaven and the God on earth. He is the Wise, the Knowing.
Blessed is He who holds the dominion of the heavens and the earth and everything between them. With Him is the knowledge of the Hour, and to Him you will be returned.
Those they invoke besides Him have no power of intercession, except those who testify to the truth while they know.
If you asked them who created them, they would surely say, "God." So how are they deluded?
And his cry, "O my Lord, these are a people who do not believe."
So turn away from them and say, "Peace." They will come to know.
