Surah “The Moon”

as rendered by Hamid S. Aziz — 55 verses

The hour drew nigh (or is nigh) and the moon was rent in twain (or is rent)
And if they see a Sign they turn aside and say, "Transient magic."
And they call it a lie, and follow their own low desires; but every affair has its appointed term
And certainly some narratives have come to them wherein is a deterrent
Consummate wisdom - but warnings avail not
So turn your back on them for the Day when the Summoner summons them unto a terrible affair
With downcast eyes, they come forth from their graves as if they were scattered locusts
Hastening towards the Summoner. The unbelievers shall say, "This is a hard day."
Before them the people of Noah rejected, yea they reject Our servant and called him mad, and he was driven away
Therefore he called upon his Lord, "I am overcome, come you then to help."
So We opened the gates of heaven with water pouring fort
And We caused water to gush forth from the land in springs; so the waters gathered together and rose according to a measure already ordained
And We bore him on that (the Ark) which was made of planks and nails (or ties of palm-fibre
Floating before Our eyes, a reward for him who was rejected
And certainly We left it as a sign, but is there anyone that remembers (or takes heed)
How great was then My punishment after My warning
And certainly We have made the Quran easy for remembrance, but is there anyone who will heed
A´ad treated the truth as a lie, so how great was My punishment after My warning
Surely We sent on them a tornado in a day of violent disaster
Tearing men away as if they were the trunks of palm-trees uprooted
How great was then My punishment after My warning
And certainly We have made the Quran easy for remembrance, but is there anyone who will heed
Thamud rejected the warning
So they said, "What! A single mortal from among us! Shall we follow him? Most surely we shall then be in sure error and madness
"Can it be that the reminder has been sent to him of all the people among us? Nay! He is an insolent liar!"
Ah, tomorrow shall they know who is the liar, the insolent one
Surely We shall send them the she-camel as a trial; therefore, watch them and have patience
And inform them that the water is to be shared between them; every drinking shall be regulated
But they called their companion, who took (the sword) and hamstrung her
How great was then My punishment after My warning
Surely We sent upon them a single Shout (or Blast), so they became like the dry stubble which the maker of an enclosure collects
And certainly We have made the Quran easy for remembrance, but is there anyone who will heed
The people of Lot treated the warning. as a lie
Surely We sent upon them a storm with stones, except Lot´s followers; We saved them a little before daybreak
A favour from Us; thus do We reward him who gives thanks
And certainly he (Lot) warned them of Our violent punishment, but they obstinately disputed the warning
And they endeavoured to snatch away his guests from him, but We blinded their eyes; "So taste you My chastisement and My warning
And early in the morning a lasting chastisement overtook them
"So taste you My chastisement after My warning."
And certainly We have made the Quran easy for remembrance, but is there anyone who will heed
And certainly the warning came to Pharaoh´s people
They rejected all Our Signs, so We overtook them with such a penalty as comes from One Mighty, Powerful
Are the unbelievers of yours (O Quraish) better than these, or is there an exemption for you in the Sacred Books
Or do they say, "We are a host allied together to help each other
But soon shall the hosts be routed, and they shall flee
Nay, the Hour is their promised time, and the Hour shall be most grievous and bitter
Surely it is the guilty who are in error and madness
On the day when they shall be dragged upon their faces into the Fire, "Taste the touch of hell."
Surely We have created everything according to a measure
And Our command is but one, as the twinkling of an eye
And certainly We have already destroyed the likes of you, but is there anyone who will heed
And everything they did is in the Scriptures (or the Record)
And everything small and great is recorded
Surely the righteous (who guard against evil) shall dwell among Gardens and Rivers
