Surah “Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn up in Ranks, The Rangers”

as rendered by A. S. Mohamed — 182 verses

By those lined up in rows,
and by those who drive forcibly,
and by the reciters of the Reminders:
Indeed, your God is indeed One.
The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what lies between them, and the Lord of the sunrises.
We have adorned the lowest heaven with the zinat of the planets,
and granted it protection against every rebellious devil.
They are not to eavesdrop on the Highest Assembly and are bombarded from every side.
Repelled they are, and they shall have an eternal punishment.
If any of them snatches a snippet, he is pursued by a piercing meteor.
Ask them, "Are they a stronger creation, or others whom We have created?" Indeed, We created them from sticky clay.
Yet, while you marvelled, they mock!
And when they are reminded, they do not pay heed.
And when they see a sign, they ridicule.
And they said, "This is nothing but clear magic!
When we die and become dust and bones, are we to be resurrected
as well as our forefathers?"
Say, "Yes indeed, and you will be in a despicable state."
It will be a single nudge, whereupon they will be looking.
They said, "Woe to us; this is the Day of the Religion."
This is the Day of Decision that you used to deny.
Gather those who transgressed and their spouses and what they used to worship
besides God, then guide them to the path to Hellfire.
And stop them, for indeed, they are to be called to account:
"What is the matter with you that you do not support one another?"
However, today, they are in total surrender.
Some of them approached one another, blaming each other.
They said, "You used to come to us from the right."
They replied, "Rather, you yourselves were not believers.
We had no authority over you. Rather, you were a transgressing people.
And thus, we have justly deserved our Lord's Word. Indeed we will taste it.
We led you astray, for indeed, we ourselves were led astray."
And so, on that Day, they will share in the punishment.
Indeed, that is what We do with the criminals.
When they were told, "There is no god except God," they acted arrogantly.
And they used to say, "Are we to abandon our gods for a crazy poet?"
Rather, he has come with the truth and confirmed the messengers.
You will surely taste the painful punishment,
and you will not be repaid except for what you used to do.
Not so for God's purified servants;
they shall have a known provision.
They shall have fruits, and they will be honoured
in the Gardens of Bliss.
Lying on couches, facing one another,
a cup from a flowing spring will be passed among them
that is white and a pleasure for the drinkers.
No adverse effect lies in it, nor do they become intoxicated from it.
And for them shall be maidens with beautiful eyes and subdued glances,
as if they were well-protected eggs.
Some of them approached one another, inquiring.
A speaker among them said, "I used to have a companion
who used to say, 'Are you of those who believe
that when we die and become dust and bones, we will be called to account?' "
He said, "Will you take a look?"
So he did look and saw him in the midst of Hellfire.
He said, "By God, you almost ruined me!
And had it not been for my Lord's blessing, I would have been among those arraigned.
Was it not that we would not die
except for our first death, and that we would not be punished?"
Indeed, this is the great triumph.
And it is the like of this that every worker should strive for.
Is this a better hospitality or the tree of Zaqqum?
We have made it an ordeal for the transgressors.
It is a tree that emerges from the depths of Hellfire.
Its emerging fruit looks as if it were the heads of devils.
And indeed, they will eat from it and fill their bellies therefrom.
Then on top of it, they will have a mixture of a boiling drink
after which their return will be to the Hellfire.
They found their fathers astray,
and so they are hastening to follow in their footsteps!
Most of the previous ones have strayed before them,
even though We did send warners in their midst.
So look what the outcome of those who have been warned was,
except for God's purified servants.
Noah called upon Us, and how excellent We are in responding!
We saved him and his family from the great affliction,
and We decreed for his offspring to be the survivors.
And We preserved his history for those who followed.
Peace be upon Noah throughout the worlds.
Indeed, We thus reward the good-doers.
Indeed, he was one of Our believing servants.
Thereafter, We drowned the others.
From his sect came Abraham.
He came to his Lord with a sound heart.
He said to his father and his people, "What are you worshipping?
Is it the falsehood of gods besides God that you desire?
What then are your thoughts about the Lord of the Worlds?"
He took a look at the stars,
then he said, "I am sick."
So they turned away from him and left.
He then slipped quietly to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?
What is the matter with you that you do not speak?"
Then he turned on them, striking them with the right.
Then they came rushing back to him.
He said, "Do you worship that which you carve,
when God created you and what you make?"
They said, "Build for him a furnace, then throw him into the blazing fire."
They intended to scheme against him, but We made them the lowest.
He said, "I am going to my Lord; He will guide me.
My Lord, grant me of the righteous ones."
So We gave him the good news of a forbearing boy.
Then, when he was old enough to accompany him, he said, "My son, I see in my sleep that I am slaughtering you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded to do. You will find me, God willing, of the patient ones."
Then, when they had both submitted and he placed his forehead on the ground,
and We called him, "O Abraham,
you have believed the vision!" Indeed, We thus reward the good-doers.
This was a clear test indeed.
We made a concession for him in place of a grave slaughter.
And We preserved his history for those who followed.
Peace be upon Abraham.
We thus reward the good-doers.
He was one of Our believing servants.
And We gave him the good news of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.
We blessed him and Isaac. From among their descendants was the good-doer and also the one who clearly wronged himself.
And indeed, We bestowed favour upon Moses and Aaron.
And We saved the two of them and their people from the great affliction.
And We supported them, and so it was they who were the victors.
And We gave the two of them the clarifying Book.
And We guided them to the straight path.
And We preserved their history for those who followed.
Peace be upon Moses and Aaron.
Indeed, We thus reward the good-doers.
They were among Our believing servants.
And indeed, Elijah was one of the messengers.
He said to his people, "Would you not be reverent?
Do you call upon Baal, and leave the best of creators?
God is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers."
They denied him, and so they will surely be arraigned,
except for God's purified servants.
And We preserved his history for those who followed.
Peace be upon Elijah.
Indeed, We thus reward the good-doers.
He was one of Our believing servants.
And indeed, Lot was one of the messengers.
We saved him and all his family,
except an old woman who was one of those who stayed behind.
Then We destroyed the others.
And indeed, you pass by them in the morning
and at night, so will you not reason?
And indeed, Jonah was one of the messengers.
When he ran off to the laden ship,
he took part in drawing lots and was among the losers.
Then the fish swallowed him, and he was blameworthy.
Had he not been among those who glorify,
he would have remained in its belly until the Day they are resurrected.
And so We cast him onto the barren shore in a state of sickness,
and We grew a gourd tree over him.
We sent him to a hundred thousand or more,
and they believed, so We granted them enjoyment for a certain time.
So ask them, "Are the daughters for your Lord, and for them are the sons?"
Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?
No indeed! It is due to their falsehood that they say,
"God has begotten," and they are liars.
Has He chosen daughters over sons?
What is the matter with you? How do you judge?
Will you not take heed?
Or do you have some clear authority?
Produce your book then if you are truthful.
And they claimed a kinship between Him and the jinn, but the jinn already know that they will be arraigned.
Glory to God. He is far above what they portray.
Not so for God's purified servants.
For indeed, you and what you worship
cannot tempt away from Him
other than he who is to roast in Hellfire.
"There is none of us who does not have a known position.
We are the ones lined up in rows,
and we are the ones who glorify."
And indeed, they used to say,
"Had we received a Reminder from the previous ones,
we would have been God's purified servants."
But they disbelieved in it, so they will surely know.
Our Word had already been given to Our servants, the messengers.
They will surely be the supported ones.
And it is Our soldiers who will surely be the victors.
So turn away from them until a certain time,
and watch them, for they will surely see.
Do they wish to hasten Our punishment?
When it comes down onto their courtyard, miserable indeed will be the morning of the ones who have been warned.
So turn away from them until a certain time,
and watch them, for they will surely see.
Glory to your Lord, the Lord of dignity. He is far above what they portray.
And peace be upon the messengers.
And praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
