Surah “Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn up in Ranks, The Rangers”

as rendered by Abdul Hye — 182 verses

By those (angels) arranged in rows,
by those (angels) who are strong in repelling (evil),
by those (angels) who bring the book (the Qur’an),
surely your one worthy of worship is indeed One (Allah),
the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that lies between them, and Lord of every point of the sun’s risings.
Surely! We have adorned the lower heaven with beautiful stars
and has guarded against all rebellious devils.
They cannot even listen to the higher group (angels) for they are pelted from every side,
repulsed and they are under a constant punishment.
Except such as snatch away something by stealing and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.
Ask them (polytheists, O Muhammad): “Are they stronger as creation, or those whom We have created?” Surely, We created them of sticky clay.
Nay, you (Muhammad) wonder while they mock (at you and the Qur’an).
When they are reminded, they don’t pay attention,
and when they see a Verse (from Allah), they mock at it
and say: “This is nothing but clear magic!
When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then surely be resurrected?
Also our forefathers of old times?”
Say (O Muhammad): “Yes and you shall then be humiliated.”
It will be only a single shout and they will be staring!
They will say: “Woe to us! This is the Day of recompense!”
(It will be said): “This is the Day of judgment which you used to deny.”
(It will be said to the angels): “Assemble those who did wrong, together with their companions whom they used to worship
besides Allah, and lead them to the way of flaming fire (hell).”
(When they will be gathered, Allah will say): “Stop them, surely they are to be questioned:
What is the matter with you? Why don’t you help one another (as you used to do in the world)?”
Nay, but that Day they shall surrender.
Some of them will face others to question one another.
They will say (to their leaders): “Surely, you used to come to us from the right (with authority to beautify every evil, enjoin polytheism, and stop us from the truth).”
They will reply: “Nay, you were not believers.
We had no authority over you. Nay! You were transgressing people,
now the Word of our Lord has become justified against us, and indeed we shall taste (the punishment).
So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray.”
Then surely on that Day, they will share in the punishment.
Certainly, that is how We shall deal with sinners
surely, when it was said to them: “There is no one worthy of worship but Allah,” they used to puff themselves up with pride
and say: “Are we going to abandon our one worthy of worship for the sake of a mad poet?”
Nay! He (Muhammad) has come with the truth and he has confirmed the (previous) Messengers.
(It will be said): “Surely, you (polytheists) are going to taste the painful punishment;
and you will be requited nothing except for what you had done (evil deeds).”
Except the chosen (faithful) devotees of Allah,
those for them will have known provision:
fruits, and they shall be honored
in the gardens of delight (Paradise),
on the thrones facing one another,
served around (them) with a cup of pure wine,
crystal-white, delicious to the drinkers.
Neither they will have any kind of hurt, headache or sin in that, nor will they suffer intoxication from that.
With them will be chaste females restraining their glances (for husbands only) with wide and beautiful eyes
as if they were preserved eggs.
Some of them will turn to others, questioning each others.
One of them will say: “Surely, I had a companion for me (in the world),
who used to say: ‘Are you among those who believe (in Resurrection after death)?
When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to deeds)?”’
It will be said (to him): “Will you look down (to see the friend)?”
So the person looked down and saw friend in the midst of the fire.
The person said: “By Allah! You have nearly ruined me.
Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to hell).
(The believer in the heaven will say): “Are we then not to die (any more)
after our first death and we shall not be punished?”
Truly, this is the supreme success!
For such an end, let everyone strive who wishes to strive.
Is this (Paradise) a better entertainment or the tree of the Zaqqum (a horrible tree in hell)?
Truly, We have made it a trail for the wrongdoers.
Surely, it is a tree that grows in the bottom of hellfire,
the shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils,
so truly, they will eat from it and fill their bellies from it.
Then surely, on top of that, they will be given a mixture of boiling water (to drink).
Then surely, their return is to the flaming fire of hell.
In fact, they found their fathers on the wrong way,
so they are too haste to follow their footsteps!
and indeed most of the ancient people went astray before them
and indeed We had sent warners (Messengers) among them.
Then see how was the end of those who were warned (all perished),
except the chosen (faithful) devotees of Allah.
And indeed Noah prayed to Us, and indeed We are the Best to answer (the prayer).
And We rescued him and his family from the great distress (drowning),
and made his progeny to be the only survivors,
and left for him (a good name) among generations to come in later times.
Peace be upon Noah (from Us) among the (people of) worlds!
Surely, thus We reward the righteous people.
Surely, he (Noah) was one of Our believing devotees.
Then We drowned the others (disbelievers).
Surely, among those who followed his (Noah’s) way was Abraham,
when he came to his Lord with a pure heart.
When he said to his father and to his people: “What is it you worship?
Is it a falsehood worthy of worship other than Allah that you seek?
Then what do you think about the Lord of the worlds?
Then he looked a glance at the stars,
and said: “Surely, I am sick (he did this trick to stay in their temple of idols to destroy them and not to accompany them to the pagan’s feast).”
So they turned away from him, and departed.
Then he turned to their idols and said: “Why don’t you eat (from food offered)?
What is the matter with you that you don’t speak?”
Then he turned upon them, striking with his right hand.
They (idol worshippers) came running towards him.
He said: ”Do you worship what you carve,
while Allah has created you and what you have make?”
They said: “Build for him a building (like a furnace) and throw him into the blazing fire!”
So they plotted against him, but We made them the lowest (humiliated).
He said (after his rescue from fire): “Surely, I am going to my Lord. He will guide me
My Lord! Grant me (offspring) from the righteous.”
So We gave him the glad tidings of a gentle boy.
When he (son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: “O my son! Surely, I have seen in the sleep (dream) that I am slaughtering you (sacrifice to Allah), so what do you think!” He said: “O my father! Do what you are commanded (by Allah), you shall find me of the patient.
Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to Allah), and he laid his son prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice);
and Allah called out to him: “O Abraham!
Surely, you have fulfilled the dream!” Surely! Thus We reward the righteous people.
Surely, that was indeed a clear trial.
We ransomed his son for a great sacrifice
and We left for him (good name) among the later generations (to come).
Peace be upon Abraham!
Thus indeed We reward the righteous people.
Surely, he was one of Our believing devotees.
And We gave him the glad tidings of (his son) Isaac, a prophet from the righteous.
We blessed him and Isaac. Of their progeny, there are some who do right, and some plainly wrong themselves.
Indeed We gave Our Grace to Moses and Aaron.
We saved them and their people from the great distress;
and helped them, so they became victorious
We gave them the clear Scripture (Torah),
and guided them to the Right Way.
We left for them (a good name) among later generations (to come).
Peace be upon Moses and Aaron!
Surely, thus We do reward the righteous people.
Surely! They were of Our believing devotees.
Surely, Elias was one of the Messengers.
When he said to his people: “Will you not fear (Allah)?
Will you call upon Bal (idol) and forsake the best of creators,
Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?”
But they denied him (Elias), so they will certainly be brought forth (to the punishment)
except the chosen (faithful) devotees of Allah.
We left for him (a good name) among later generations (to come).
Peace be upon Elias!
Surely, thus We reward the righteous people.
Surely, he was one of Our believing devotees.
Surely, Lot was one of the Messengers.
When We saved him and all his family,
except an old woman (who was) among those who remained behind
then We destroyed the rest (the towns of Sodom at the Dead Sea in Jordan).
Surely, you pass by them in the morning,
and at night; will you not then reflect (think)?
Surely, Jonah was one of the Messengers.
When he ran to the laden ship,
he (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers.
Then a (big) fish swallowed him while he had done an act worthy of blame.
Had it not been that he was of those who glorify (Allah),
he would have indeed remained in its belly (the fish) till the Day of Resurrection.
Then We cast him out on the naked shore while he was sick
and We caused a plant of gourd (squash) to grow over him.
Then We had sent him to a nation of 100,000 people or even more.
They believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while.
Now ask them (disbelievers, O Muhammad): (Does it make sense that) your Lord should have only daughters while they choose to have sons
Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses
Surely, they invent a lie when they say:
“Allah has begotten (children). Surely, they are liars!”
Has He chosen daughters (rather than) sons?
What is the matter with you? How do you decide?
Will you not then remember?
Or is there any plain authority for you?
Then bring your book if you are truthful!
They have invented a kinship between Him and the jinns, but indeed the jinns know quite well that they will be brought for account (before Allah)
Glory be to Allah! (He is free) from what they attribute to Him
except the chosen (faithful) devotees of Allah.
So, neither you nor those whom you worship (idols)
can lead (anyone) astray
except those who are destined to burn in hell!
(The angels say): “There is one known place for us.
Surely, we stand in rows (for prayers);
surely, we are those who glorify (Allah).”
Indeed they (disbelievers) used to say:
“If we had a reminder like the people of old received (before the coming of Muhammad)
we would have indeed been the chosen devotees of Allah!”
But (since the Qur’an has come) they disbelieve in it (the Qur’an), and they will come to know (the consequence soon)!
Surely, Our Word has gone forth for Our devotees, the Messengers,
that surely they would be victorious
and verily, Our hosts (soldiers) will be victorious.
So turn away (O Muhammad) from them for a while,
and watch them, and they shall see (your victory)!
Do they seek to hasten on Our Punishment?
Then, when it descends into their court-yard (near them), then evil will be the morning for those who had been warned!
So turn (O Muhammad) away from them for a while,
and watch (their downfall) and they shall see (your victory)!
Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of honor and power, (He is free) from what they attribute to Him!
Peace be upon the Messengers
and all the praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
