11:1
Alif. Lãm. Ra. A timeless book, the verses of which were endowed with wisdom, and then distinctly ordered— from the divine domain of One all-wise, all-aware:
11:2
That you worship none except Allah. [Sent in a divinely ordered sequence to the Messenger who said:] “I am a warner unto you from
HIM and a bearer of divine tidings.”
11:3
And that: “Seek forgiveness from your
Rabb and then turn to
HIM in repentance.
HE provides you with a beautiful provision spanning a defined term, and
HE gives each possessor of bounty, his bounty. If you turn away from
HIM, then I do fear a punishment upon you of a transcendent day.”
11:4
Unto Allah is your defined return, and
HE has control over all things and their measure.
11:5
Without question, they wrap their inner selves in folds, to be hidden from
HIM! Without question, the while they take cover under their wraps,
HE knows what they conceal and what they declare. Of certain,
HE is ever knowing of the holdings of the inner selves.
11:6
There is not any creature on earth, except that its sustenance is upon Allah.
HE knows its habitation and its repository. All of it is in an ever-clear indelible record.
11:7
HE is the One who has created the heavens and the earth in six [heavenly] days. And it was ever
HIS throne upon the water [conferring life], that HE may test which of you is best in conduct. Whereas, if and when you say, “You are bound to be raised again after death,” the disbelievers will surely say, “This [claim] is nothing, save plain fantasy.”
11:8
And if and when
WE hold back the punishment from them, until a community meets a determined calculus, they assert, “What is holding it back?” Without question, on the day it comes to them, it will not be divertible from them. And that which they were mocking will engulf them.
11:9
And if and when
WE make man taste mercy from
US, and then
WE withdraw it from him— he does turn despondent, ungrateful.
11:10
And if and when
WE let him taste a blessing after a hardship had grazed him, he asserts, “Gone are the ills from me.” He does turn exultant, boastful.
11:11
Except the ones who patiently persevered and did the right deeds. They are those for whom is forgiveness, and a transcendent reward.
11:12
So then, would
you possibly be one to leave out some of what has been revealed unto
you, while straitened by it is your heart, that they say, “Why has a treasure not been sent upon him, or [why has not] an angel come with him?”
You are only a warner. And Allah is trustee over all things.
11:13
Or do they say, “He fabricated it.” Say, “Do then come with ten fabricated
surahs in its likeness, and call whoever you can, besides Allah, if you be truthful.
11:14
And if they, [who you may call in your aid] do not respond to you, then be apprised that it has been sent down with Allah’s knowledge. And [be apprised] that there is no god except
HIM. Will you then submit to God?”
11:15
Whoever desires the life of the world and its material glamour,
WE will pay them fully for their works, and they will be given no less.
11:16
Those very ones have nothing in the Hereafter except the fire. Wasted was what they had produced therein, and what they were doing was false.
11:17
So then [for a true pursuit]—is there [a better path to follow than the path of] one who is on a proven message from HIS
Rabb, and it is recited to him by a witness from HIM. And before it, was the book of Moses, [each] showing the way, and [each] a mercy. Those [following HIS guidance], believe in him [i.e., the Prophet]. Whoever disbelieves in him, from the cobbled coalition [of adversaries], the fire is his appointed place. So, [O man] be not in an unsettled doubt of it. Surely, it is the Truth from
your Rabb though most of humankind do not believe.
11:18
And who does more wrong than one who invents a lie against Allah? Those ones shall be presented before their
Rabb, and the witnesses will say, “These here are the ones who attributed lies to their
Rabb.” Unquestionably, the denunciation of Allah is on the wrongdoers—
11:19
the ones who hinder others from the way of Allah and seek to ascribe faults to it, while they are disbelievers in the Hereafter.
11:20
Such are not to be thwarters of [God’s design] on the earth, and neither are there to be any protectors for them besides Allah. Their punishment shall be doubled; they were not able to stand the hearing [of the Word], nor were they seeing.
11:21
Those are the ones who squandered their souls, and what they were devising deserted them.
11:22
Without exception, in the Hereafter, it is they who are the [real] losers.
11:23
Indeed, those who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds and have humbly submitted unto their
Rabb— they are the deserving beneficiaries of the garden, abiders therein.
11:24
The similitude of the two groups is like the blind and deaf, and the seer and the listener. Are they both at par as models? Will you then not reflect and heed?
11:25
WE did send Noah unto his people, “I indeed am a plain warner unto you,
11:26
that you worship none, save Allah. I truly am fearful of a punishment upon you on an agonizing day.”
11:27
The notables from amongst his people who disbelieved, responded, “We do see that you are not but a mortal like us, and we do not see any other people following you except the lowest amongst us, fickle of opinion. And we do not see you all having any obvious merit over us. Nay, we deem you all liars.”
11:28
He said, “O my people, have you considered, [what it is that you squander] if I be on a proven path from my
Rabb, and
HE has given me mercy from
HIS Realm, and [for your attitude] it is made imperceptible to you? Can we compel you to it, while you are disinclined to it?
11:29
“And O my people, I do not ask you any goods for it. My compensation is upon none but Allah. And I am not one to drive away the ones who have embraced Faith. Behold! They are their
Rabb’s invitees. On the contrary, I see you as a people who choose to stay unenlightened.”
11:30
“And O my people, who will deliver me from Allah if I push them away! Will you not reflect and heed?”
11:31
“And I am not saying to you that with me are the treasuries of Allah. I do not have any knowledge of the unseeable Reality. I am also not saying that I am an angel, nor am I saying about those who are lowly in your eyes, that Allah will not ever give them good. Allah knows best what is in their souls. [Were I to say other than that] I would certainly then be of the ones who do wrong.”
11:32
They said, “O Noah. You have already given us your arguments, and you have stretched our dispute much too long. So now bring upon us that which you have forewarned us of, if you be of the truthful.”
11:33
He said, “Only Allah can bring it upon you, if
HE has willed it so, and you are not the ones to thwart it.
11:34
My counsel will not profit you, if Allah intends that
HE keeps you lost— no matter that I intended to counsel you.
HE is your
Rabb and to
HIM you are being returned.”
11:35
Or do they say, “He has fabricated it.” Say, “If I have fabricated this then upon me is my crime, but I am absolved of what you are guilty of.”
11:36
It was revealed unto Noah: “Never will any [more] of your people believe, except those who have already believed. Therefore, do not be distressed by what they do.”
11:37
“Assemble the vessel under
OUR Eyes and
OUR inspiration and do not address
ME regarding those who persist in transgressing. They
are slated to be drowned.”
11:38
And he took to assembling the vessel. And every time the notables from amongst his people passed by, they scoffed at him. He said, “If you scoff at us, then [for your folly] we scoff at you—just as you scoff.”
11:39
For you shall know unto whom a punishment will visit, shaming him, and upon him a standing punishment will legitimately fall.
11:40
[They continued to scoff] until the time when
OUR command came, and the kiln had gushed forth.
WE said, “Load on it each of every two mates, and
your family—except one upon whom the divine word has preceded. And [board] those who have come to believe.” And not had believed with him except a few.
11:41
He said, “Embark on it! In the name of Allah be its course and its mooring. Of certain, My
Rabb is forgiving, ever merciful.”
11:42
And with them [all on board], it set sail through mountain-like waves. And Noah called out to his son while he stood aside, detached, “O my cherished son come on board with us and be not with the disbelievers.”
11:43
He said, “I shall take refuge on a mountain, to safeguard me from the water.” He said, “Today there is none to safeguard from the command of Allah, except he to whom
HE has granted mercy.” The waves drew the boundary between them, and he was of the ones who were drowned.
11:44
It was said, “O Land, swallow your water and O sky, cease!” The water subsided, and the command was fulfilled, and the vessel came to rest upon
Al-Judi. It had been said, “Oblivion for the unjust people.”
11:45
Noah called upon his
Rabb, he said, “My
Rabb, my son is surely of my family and surely, YOUR promise is the Truth.
YOU are the most just of the judges.”
11:46
HE said, “O Noah, he surely is not of
your family. Indeed, a conduct other than righteous. So then, do not question
ME about that of which you have no knowledge.
I counsel you, lest you become of the ignorant ones.
11:47
He said, “My
Rabb, I do seek refuge in
YOU, that I asked
YOU about something of which I have no knowledge. And if
YOU do not forgive me and have mercy on me, I would be of the losers”
11:48
It was said, “O Noah, disembark with peace from
US and blessings upon
you and upon a set of descendants of those who are with
you. And a set of descendants
WE shall allow to indulge; thereafter, an agonizing chastisement from
US will scrub them.”
11:49
Those are the accounts of the unseeable realm which
WE have revealed to
you. Ere this,
you were not knowing of them, and neither were
your people. Be patient and persevere. The abiding outcome belongs to the God-conscious.
11:50
And unto
Aad [
WE sent] their brother Hud. He said, “O my people worship Allah. You have no god other than
HIM. You are naught, save fabricators.”
11:51
“O my people, I do not ask any reward from you for it. My reward is only on
HIM Who made me as I am. Will you then not apply reason?”
11:52
“And O my people, seek forgiveness from your
Rabb and turn in repentance unto
HIM.
HE will send down plentiful showers from the sky upon you and add strength to your strength. And do not turn away as flouters of divine guidance.”
11:53
They said, “O Hud, you have not come to us with any telling evidence, and we are not ones to leave our gods for a mere saying of
yours. We do not believe you.”
11:54
“We can say nothing, except that some of our gods have stricken you with ill.” He said, “I call Allah to witness, and you bear witness that I am absolved of all that you falsely associate to divinity—
11:55
other than
HIM.
So, plan against me, all together, and thereafter give me no respite.
11:56
“Truly, I have put my trust in Allah, my
Rabb, and your
Rabb. There is not any creature except
HE seizes it by its forelock. Verily, my
Rabb is on a timelessly straight path.
11:57
So then, if you turn away— yet, I have delivered unto you what I was sent to you with. My
Rabb will give succession to a people other than you. You cannot harm
HIM in any way. Hearken! My
Rabb is guardian over everything”
11:58
And when
OUR command came into effect,
WE saved Hud and those who had believed with him, with mercy from
US. And
WE saved them from an intractable punishment.
11:59
And such was
Aad, who repudiated the signs of their
Rabb and rebelled against
HIS Messengers while they followed the command of every stubborn compeller.
11:60
They were followed in this world with denunciation and [so will it be] on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably
Aad disbelieved in their
Rabb. Inevitable was oblivion for
Aad, the people of Hud.
11:61
And unto
Thamūd [
WE sent] their brother
Salih.
HE said, “O my people worship Allah. You do not have any god other than
HIM.
HE has brought you into being from the earth and settled you on it. So, seek
HIS forgiveness and turn to him in repentance. Behold, my
Rabb is ever-near, ever-responsive.
11:62
They said, “O
Salih. Before this, you amongst us were the most counted on. Do you forbid us to worship what our forefathers worshipped? Surely, we categorically are in doubtful distrust of what you call us to.”
11:63
He said, “O my people have you considered: If I am with telling evidence from my
Rabb and
HE has given me mercy from
HIS Realm? Who then could help me against Allah if I disobeyed
HIM? Then, what would you add to me other than extending a loss?”
11:64
“And O my people this she-camel of Allah is a sign for you. So, leave her to feed on Allah’s land, and do not cause her harm, lest an imminent punishment seizes you.”
11:65
Then, [despite that explicit warning], they hamstrung her. Thereupon,
Salih said, “Enjoy yourselves in your zone for three days. That is a promise not to be belied.”
11:66
So, when
OUR command came into effect,
WE saved
Salih and those who believed with him, through mercy from
US — [and saved them] from the disgrace of that day. Behold!
Your Rabb,
HE is the all-powerful, the almighty.
11:67
And the Blast seized the ones who did wrong, so next, they lay face down in their homes—
11:68
as though they had never lived and thrived there. Unquestionably, the
Thamūd rejected their
Rabb. Inevitable was oblivion for the
Thamūd.
11:69
OUR Messengers did indeed come to Abraham with divine tidings. They said, “[We bear you] Peace [
Salaam],” and he replied, “Peace [
Salaam].” Then without further ado, he came back with a roasted calf.
11:70
But then when he saw their hand not reach out for it, he gauged that he had misread them and felt a fear from them. They said, “Do not fear. Verily, WE have been sent to the people of Lot.”
11:71
And his wife was there, standing, then she laughed, for
WE gave her tidings about Isaac, and of Jacob after Isaac.
11:72
She said, “Alas! Shall I bear a child while I am an old woman, and this husband-guardian of mine is an old man! Surely, this would be an implausible thing!”
11:73
They said, “Are you astonished by Allah’s command?” The mercy of Allah and
HIS blessings are upon you, O people of the House.
HE is ever praised, ever glorious.
11:74
Thereupon, when the apprehension from Abraham had subsided and the glad tiding had reached him, he began arguing with
US regarding the people of Lot.
11:75
Indeed, Abraham most certainly was forbearing, tenderhearted, penitent.
11:76
“O Abraham let go of this. Surely, the command of
your Rabb has come, and a punishment— not to be repelled— is surely coming upon them.”
11:77
And when
OUR Messengers did come to Lot, he was in anguish about them and had no capacity to ably facilitate them. He said, “This is a consequential day.”
11:78
His people came rushing toward him, and before that they were performing their foul deeds. He said “O my people these here are my daughters— they are more naturally pure for you. So [for having been warned], fear Allah and do not disgrace me in front of my guests. Is there not a man of rectitude among you?”
11:79
They said, “You already know. What cause do we have to any claim to your daughters? And you know well, what we desire.”
11:80
He said, “Would that there was a strength for me to have to deal with you, or I had recourse to a firm support.”
11:81
The [guests] said, “O Lot we are messengers from
your Rabb. They cannot lay a hand on you. So, set out with your family in a [still] period of the night and let not any one of you look back— except
your wife. It is certain that what is to befall them will befall her. In the morning is their tryst. Is the morning not near?”
11:82
Then when
OUR command came into effect,
WE turned it upside down, while WE rained stones of baked clay over it, in a volley—
11:83
marked and slated in the realm of
your Rabb, and not off-target from the wrongdoers.
11:84
And unto Madyan [
WE sent] their brother
Shuaib. He said, “O my people worship Allah. You have no god other than
HIM. Do not give short in measure or in weight. I do see that you are doing well, but I do fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing day.”
11:85
“And O my people give fully by the measure and the scale, in fairness, and do not deprive people of things that belong to them and do not act wickedly in the land, spreading corruption.”
11:86
Allah’s assigned remainder for you is best for you if you are believers. And I am not in a guardian’s capacity over you.
11:87
They said, “O
Shuaib, does your [way of] prayer bid you that we leave what our forefathers worshipped or that we not do with our wealth as we will? Surely, you are quite the forbearing one, the one with rectitude.”
11:88
He said, “O my people have you considered: if I be on telling evidence from my
Rabb, and
HE has provided me a good sustenance from HIMSELF? I do not desire that I antagonize you toward what I forbid to you. I desire no other than reform, in whatever degree I can. And my success is only through Allah. Upon
HIM I place my trust and unto
HIM do I always turn in repentance.”
11:89
“And O my people, let not the rift with me drive you to sin, lest you are afflicted by the like of what afflicted the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of
Salih; and the people of Lot were not far away from you.”
11:90
“Seek forgiveness from your
Rabb, then turn to
HIM in repentance. Indeed! My
Rabb is ever merciful, loving.”
11:91
They said, “O
Shuaib, we cannot put into practice much of what you say. And we do see you as the weak one in our midst. If it were not for your clan, we would have surely stoned you. And you have no standing over us.”
11:92
He said, “O my people, does my clan bear more power over you than Allah? You take
HIM as extraneous to you, out of disregard. My
Rabb is ever
encompassing of all that you do.
11:93
“O my people, work according to your respective positions, I am a worker, at work. You are to know whom a punishment will visit, shaming him, and who is the liar. Be watchful; I too am with you, watching.”
11:94
And when
OUR command came into effect,
WE saved
Shuaib and those who had believed with him by mercy from
US, and the blast seized the ones who were unjust. Next, they lay face down in their homes.
11:95
As if they had never lived and thrived there. Inevitable was oblivion for the Madyan just as the
Thamūd acquired oblivion.
11:96
WE did indeed send Moses with
OUR signs and evident authority
11:97
unto Pharaoh and his nobles. Yet they followed the command of Pharaoh and Pharaoh’s command was not one based in rectitude.
11:98
He will walk ahead of his people on the Day of Resurrection—so will he have led them to the fire [as one leads to water]. How wretched the satiation, and the satiated!
11:99
And in this here, they were made to pursue a curse, and on the Day of Resurrection. How wretched the offering and the recipient!
11:100
Those are some of the accounts of the settlements of which
WE relate to
you. Some of them are still standing, and others reaped off.
11:101
WE did not wrong them, on the contrary, they wronged themselves. For their gods— the ones they were seeking, besides Allah— availed them not when the command of
your Rabb came into effect. And they [the false gods] added nothing to them other than their perishment.
11:102
And such was the seizure of
your Rabb when
HE seized the communities, while they were unjustly wrong. Indeed,
HIS seizure is severely painful.
11:103
Surely, in that is a definite sign for whoever fears the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a day for which humankind will be one collective gathering. That is a day, entrusted with [perfect] testimony.
11:104
WE will not delay it except to the defined time.
11:105
A day when it arrives, no soul will talk, except by
HIS permission. So [for their own doings], of them is the miserable one, and the happy one.
11:106
So, as for those in misery, for being in the fire— for them therein are sighs and sobs.
11:107
Therein to abide, for as long as the heavens and earth continue to exist, except as willed by
your Rabb. It is
your Rabb— HE is the consummate executor of whatever
HE intends.
11:108
As for those bestowed happiness for being in the Garden, therein shall they abide for as long the heavens and the earth continue to exist, except as willed by
your Rabb. A bestowal not broken in flow or parts.
11:109
Do not be in any unsettled doubt about what these people worship. They do not worship except the way their forefathers worshipped aforetime. Surely,
WE shall pay them their share in full—undiminished.
11:110
WE did give Moses the timeless Book; following which they developed differences therein. If it were not for a pronouncement from
your Rabb which had preceded, the matter between them would have been settled contemporaneously. Verily, they categorically are in doubtful distrust of it.
11:111
Surely, for each is a time, for
your Rabb to fully repay them for their deeds. Surely,
HE is fully aware of all their doings.
11:112
So be upright as
you have been commanded, along with whoever with
you turns to [HIM} in repentance. And do not overstep the bounds. Surely,
HE has complete insight into what you do.
11:113
Do not [you all] be dependent on the ones given to doing wrong, lest the fire grazes you. And you do not have protecting allies short of Allah. Further to that, you will not be helped.
11:114
And make Prayer an anchor at the two ends of the day, and during the unfolding stages of the night. Of certain, beautiful deeds purge ill deeds. That is a reminder for the ones devoted to the remembrance of God.
11:115
Be patient and persevere. For surely, Allah will not fail to deliver the reward of the ones who do good in devotion to God.
11:116
Why were there not people from generations before you who held on to a remnant [of the Truth], speaking out against the corruption in the land—except the few, whom
WE saved from amongst them? And the ones given to doing wrong pursued the opulence they were given therein and were flouters of divine guidance.
11:117
And not was
your Rabb to destroy the settlements unjustly, while its members were reformers.
11:118
If
your Rabb had so willed,
HE would have made humankind one community. Whereas [by
HIS will] they are not to cease to differ contentiously,
11:119
except for those upon whom
your Rabb has
bestowed mercy. And for that
HE created them. While the pronouncement of
your Rabb, “
I will most certainly fill
Jahannam with
Jinn and humankind, all together,” gets completed.
11:120
All
WE relate to
you from accounts of the Messengers is that by which
WE steady your heart and mind. There has come to
you in this discourse the Truth and a source of counsel, and a reminder for the believers.
11:121
Say to those who do not believe, “Work according to your respective positions. Surely, we are workers, at work.
11:122
“And bide. Indeed, we are biders.”
11:123
To Allah belongs the unseeable Reality of the heavens and the earth and to
HIM is returned the Command [and the existence ushered by it]— all of it. So, worship
HIM and place your trust in
HIM.
Your Rabb is not anywise unaware about what you do.
