4:1  O humankind, be conscious of your Rabb WHO created you from a single soul, and created from it its mate, and spread from the two many men and women. Be conscious of God by WHOM you ask of each other and [by WHOM] are the bonds of the wombs. Behold, Allah is ever watchful over you.
4:2  Give to the orphans their belongings, and do not substitute the inferior [belongings of yours] for the good [belongings of theirs], and do not consume their wealth by attaching to your wealth. That, indeed, is a tremendous outrage.
4:3  And if you fear that you may fail to be equitable regarding the orphans, then marry according to what is agreeable to you, from among the women [who do not have orphan children]— two, three, or four. However, if you fear not being just, then [marry] one, or [marry] of the ones whom your right hands have possessed. That is most fundamental — that you do not deviate from the right course [by overextending your means].
4:4  Give the women their bridal present as a gift, and if they, on their own accord, are pleased for you to have something of it, then expend it for [your and her] personal comfort.
4:5  Do not give to the unsound of mind that of your property which Allah has placed as ongoing support for you. And provide for them through it, and clothe them, and speak to [and for] them with kind and empathic words.
4:6  Assess the orphans until they have reached the matrimonial stage. Then if you sense from them maturity of mind, transfer their wealth to them. Do not consume it wastefully, and in a haste, against their coming of age. Whoever is of means should refrain entirely, and whoever is poor and without means should consume from it in a fair and justifiable manner. Then when you transfer their belongings to them, take witnesses on their behalf. And Allah is sufficient as reckoner.
4:7  For men, there is a share from what is left behind by parents and close relatives and for women, a share from that which was left behind by parents and close relatives, be it little or much— a share ordained.
4:8  When the ones close by kinship or proximity [to the deceased], orphans, and needy are present at the time of distribution, give them some provision from it and speak to [and for] them with fair and empathic words.
4:9  And let them somberly consider were they to leave behind dependent children, they would have feared on their account. Let them be ever conscious of Allah and let them always speak the straight and directly relevant word.
4:10  Hearken! Those who wrongfully consume the property of the orphans, they are only stuffing a fire in their bellies, and they shall fuel a blaze.
4:11  Allah directs you concerning your children: For the male, the equivalent of the portion of two females. But if there are [only] daughters— above two, then for them is two thirds of what was left behind and if there is just one then for her is half. And for the parents, for each one of the two, a sixth of what he left behind if there be a child. But if he had no child and his parents are his inheritors, then for his mother, a third. If he has siblings, then for his mother, a sixth. [All of that] after any bequest, he bequeathed or any [outstanding] debts [he had incurred]. Your parents and your children— you cannot ascertain which of them is more likely a beneficiary to you. A duty from Allah. Behold! Allah is forever knowing, wise.
4:12  And for you is half of what your wives left behind if they have no child. But if they have a child, then for you a fourth from what they left behind after any bequest they bequeathed in it, or debts [they owed]. And for them [i.e., your wives] a fourth of what you left behind if you have no child. But if you have a child then for them is an eighth of what you left, after any bequest you bequeathed, or debts [you owed]. If a man or a woman [whose wealth] is to be inherited leaves behind no direct descendants or ascendents and he has a brother or a sister then for each of the two a sixth. But if there are more than that, then they are equals in the third of [what remains] after any bequest bequeathed, or the debt [he or she owed]—without prejudice. A grant of bequest from Allah. Allah is ever knowing, forbearing.
4:13  Those are the bounds set by Allah. Whoever obeys Allah and HIS Messenger, HE will admit them to gardens subservient to which rivers flow— abiders therein. And transcendent success, such as that!
4:14  Whoever disobeys Allah and HIS Messenger and transgresses the bounds set by HIM, HE will make him enter the fire— to abide therein. And for him is a humbling punishment.
4:15  Those of your women charged with immoral conduct — call witnesses against them, four [witnesses] from amongst you. Thereupon, if they have borne witness against them—confine them to their homes until death collects them, or [until] Allah makes a way for them.
4:16  And the two of you who commit it— penalize them both. Thereupon if they repent and make amends, then let off both. Allah is accepting of repentance, ever merciful.
4:17  The acceptance of repentance by Allah pertains to only the ones who commit their sin in ignorance and repent soon after [realizing]— they are the ones whose repentance Allah accepts. Allah ever is all-knowing, all-wise.
4:18  The acceptance of repentance is not for the ones who keep committing their misdeeds until death is on hand singling out one of them, and he says, “I am truly repentant now,” nor for the ones who die while they are still disbelievers. For them, WE have readied an agonizing punishment.
4:19  O you who have embraced Faith, not lawful is it for you that you inherit women [or inherit from women], against their will. And do not strong-arm them [in any way] in order to take away some of what you have given to them [before], excepting that they are involved in an open immoral conduct. Live with them in a caring and empathic manner, for if you dislike them, possible it is that you dislike a thing in which Allah has placed immense good.
4:20  And if you are set upon wanting to replace a wife with another wife, and [even if] you have given to this one of them in heaps, do not take back anything of it. Would you take it back through a slander and a blatant sin?
4:21  How could you take it back when you have been physically intimate, one to the other, and they had taken from you an inviolably sacred covenant?
4:22  And do not marry from women who were married to your fathers, except what has already transpired. That indeed is immoral, abhorrent and an odious way.
4:23  Forbidden unto you are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, the daughters of your brothers, the daughters of your sisters, your milk-mothers, your milk-sisters, the mothers of your wives, and your stepdaughters in your guardianship, from your wives with whom you have consummated your marriage. But if you have not consummated your marriage with them, then there is no offense attributable to you. [Forbidden to you are] the wives of your sons, the ones from your loins, and [forbidden too] are two sisters together, except that which has already transpired. Surely, Allah is forgiving, ever merciful.
4:24  And [forbidden to you are] all women who are spoken for [or otherwise shielded from solicitation], except those your right hands have possessed. [That is] Allah’s prescription for you. And made lawful for you, what is beyond that, is that you seek with your wealth, to be providers of security, other than ones driven by their lust. Accordingly, for whatever joy you took in, from being with them, give them, on an obligatory basis, their rightful due. There is no offense attributable to you in what you mutually agree to, after fulfilling the obligation. Hearken! Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.
4:25  And whoever of you lacks the required means of marrying dowry-entitled, believing women, then [let him marry] from among your believing bondmaids whom your right hands have possessed. Allah knows best about your faith. You are of each other, therefore marry them with the permission of their family and give them their rightful due, in fairness and empathy, as women [worthy of being] protected in wedlock, without being ones driven by lust, and not ones wanting to take secret partners. And if, after they are given marital security, they are guilty of immoral conduct, then upon them is half of the penalty due upon the dowry-entitled women. That is for whoever among you fears the temptation of sin. If you are patient— that is better for you. Allah is forgiving, ever merciful.
4:26  Allah intends to make HIS message categorically clear to you and guide you to the [ethical] practices of the ones before you and to relent unto you. Allah is ever knowing, all-wise.
4:27  Allah intends that HE relents unto you, whereas those who follow their own lusts, they intend that you slide down an unending slope.
4:28  Allah intends to lighten [the ask] of you. And man was created weak.
4:29  O you who have embraced Faith, do not consume your possessions between yourselves in false pursuits [or through false claims], except that it be an act of trade ensuing from an agreement among you. And kill not yourselves. Of certain, ever is Allah merciful towards you.
4:30  And whoever does that with hostility and injustice, WE shall make him fuel a fire. And that is easy for Allah.
4:31  If you steer away from the major [sins], you have been forbidden from, WE will erase your misdeeds from you and WE will give you passage at a noble gate.
4:32  Do not covet what Allah has graced with—some of you above others. For men there is their undeniable share from what they have earned and for women is their undeniable share from what they have earned. Ask Allah of HIS grace. Hearken! Ever is Allah all-knowing of all things.
4:33  WE have appointed heirs for everything that which is left behind by parents and close relatives. Those who your oaths have bound you to, give them their promised share. Hearken! Ever is Allah a witness over all things.
4:34  Men are caretakers of their women because Allah has graced some over others, and because they have spent of their wealth. So, righteous women are devoted, ever protective of the inner sacred commitment [of marriage], because Allah has protected [it]. And those whose demeaning behavior you fear—appeal to their conscience and leave them apart in their beds and analyze them. So then, if they obey you, do not seek any recourse against them. Hearken! Ever is Allah is exalted, transcendent.
4:35  If you fear a rift between the two, appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family. If they both desire to mend, Allah will sow reconciliation between them. Hearken! Ever is Allah all-knowing, all-aware.
4:36  Serve Allah and do not associate anything with HIM. And be selflessly good to your parents, and with the ones close by right of kinship, and the orphans, and the needy, and the neighbor with claim of kinship and the not-of-kin neighbor, and your companion by your side, and the wayfarer, and those your right hands have possessed. Behold! Allah loves not anyone trapped in bragging self-conceit.
4:37  [Allah loves not] those who are miserly and bid the people to miserliness and conceal what Allah has bestowed upon them from HIS grace. And WE have readied a humbling punishment for the disbelievers.
4:38  And [Allah loves not] those who spend their wealth for the sights of the people, and do not believe in Allah and in the Last Day. And [Allah loves not] one to whom Satan is being a close companion— evil is he for a companion.
4:39  And what burden would be upon them, if they were to believe in Allah and the Last Day and spend from what Allah has provided them! Ever is Allah knowing about them.
4:40  Behold! Allah does not wrong even by a particle’s weight, and if there be a good deed, HE multiples it. HE gives, from HIS divine domain, a transcendent reward.
4:41  So, [when souls are recompensed], how will it be when WE bring forth from every community a witness and WE bring you as a witness against these ones?
4:42  On that day, the ones who disbelieved and disobeyed the Prophet will wish that the earth were leveled, flattening them. And they will not conceal a single event [of their lives] from Allah.
4:43  O you who have embraced Faith, do not approach the [formal] prayer while you are in a state of intoxication—[not] until you know what you are saying. And [do not approach formal prayer] if you are physically unclean—[not] until you have bathed, except those crossing the journey’s stretch. If you are sick, or traveling, or have relieved yourself, or engaged in sexual intimacy with your wives, and then cannot find water, then wipe your faces and hands with pristine earthly dust. [Take heart]! Ever is Allah pardoning, forgiving.
4:44  Have you not observed the ones who were given a share from the timeless Book, trading it in for error, while they want that you would stray from the Path?
4:45  Allah knows best about your enemies. Sufficient is Allah as an ally and sufficient is Allah as a helper.
4:46  From among those who profess the Jewish faith are those who distort the [divine] Word, taking away from its substance, and say, “We heard, and we disobeyed,” and “Hear! You bereft of listening,” and “rāʿinā”— twisting their speech in sarcasm toward Faith. If they had said, “We have heard, and we have obeyed,” and “Hear [us] and give us time,” that would surely have been better for them and more upstanding. But Allah has denounced them for their denial of the truth. So, they are not to believe, except a few.
4:47  O you who have been given the timeless Book, believe in what WE have revealed as a validator for what is with you, ere WE obliterate faculties, and thus send them backwards [in regression]. Or (ere) WE denounce them as WE denounced the violators of the Sabbath. The command of Allah is fulfillment bound.
4:48  Hearken! Allah does not forgive the association of partners with HIM, while HE forgives what is short of that to whoever HE wills. He who associates partners with Allah has concocted a transcendent sin.
4:49  Have you not observed those who attribute purity to themselves? Nay! Allah! HE purifies whom HE wills. And they will not be wronged, not the tiniest bit.
4:50  Behold how they concoct false attributions to Allah. That fully qualifies as a blatant sin.
4:51  Have you not observed those who were given their share from the timeless Book, believing in their myths and their false beliefs and overlords, saying regarding those who have disbelieved, “These here are better guided of way, than those who have believed?”
4:52  Those very ones Allah has denounced. Whoever Allah denounces, for him you cannot find a helper.
4:53  Or do they have a share in the dominion? [If they had] they would not deliver a speck to people.
4:54  Or do they envy other people on account of what Allah has given to them of HIS bounty? For WE have already given to the lineage of Abraham from the timeless Book, along with the wisdom, and WE have given them a transcendent kingdom.
4:55  So, of them are those who have believed in [the God-given bounty] and of them are those who have dissuaded [others] from it. Sufficient is Jahannam, as a blaze.
4:56  Hearken! Those who reject OUR signs— WE shall have them fuel a fire. As often as their skins are burnt through, WE shall give them replacement skins, so that they may partake the punishment. Hearken! Ever is Allah almighty, all-wise.
4:57  Those who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds, WE shall admit them to gardens, subservient to which rivers flow—abiders therein beyond time. For them therein are purified spouses and WE will admit them into a sheltering shade.
4:58  Hearken! Allah bids you to deliver the trusts to their rightful owners. And when you judge between people, [HE bids you] that you judge with justice. Surely, best is that which Allah counsels you with. Ever is Allah all-hearing, all-seeing.
4:59  O you who have embraced Faith, obey Allah and the Messenger and those among you who are vested with the authority of command. Then if you are in dispute over any matter, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is best and the worthiest resolution.
4:60  Did you not observe those who, claiming to have believed in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you, they want adjudication based on false beliefs and false overlords? Whereas they were indeed commanded to reject them. Satan desires that he takes them astray— a straying afar.
4:61  When it is said to them, “Come to what has been revealed by Allah, and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites, dissuade and hold back others from you in obstruction.
4:62  So how about when a disastrous ordeal strikes them because of what their own hands wrought, and then they come to you [declaratively] swearing on Allah, “We did not intend anything except goodness and accommodation.”
4:63  Those very ones— Allah knows whatever is in their hearts. So, dismiss what emanates from them, and admonish them and speak to what is in their souls in telling words.
4:64  WE do not send any Messenger except that he be obeyed— by the leave of Allah. Would that they had come to you when they had wronged their souls. For then they would have sought forgiveness from Allah, and the Messenger would have sought forgiveness for them. Of certain, they would have found Allah accepting of repentance, ever merciful.
4:65  But no! By your Rabb they do not [truly] believe until they empower you to judge upon what has developed between them, and further to that, they find no objection within their souls in what you have ruled and accept wholeheartedly.
4:66  If WE had decreed for them: “Lay down your lives,” or “Leave your homes,” they would have not done that except a few of them. If they had done just what they were advised to do, that would have been better for them, and a more solid substantiation of [their good intentions].
4:67  And that is when WE surely would have given them, from OUR divine domain, a transcendent reward.
4:68  And WE would have surely guided them on a straight path.
4:69  Whosoever follows Allah and the Messenger— those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has conferred blessings: the prophets, and the people who affirm and live the Truth, and the martyrs, and the righteous. And beauteous are those for company!
4:70  That Grace is from Allah. And Allah suffices as knower.
4:71  O you who have embraced Faith, be on your guard. Then set out spiritedly in distinct companies or set out spiritedly as a collective.
4:72  And there indeed will be among you one sure to purposely fall behind. Then if a disaster strikes you, he says, “Allah did confer a blessing upon me, given that I was not present with them.”
4:73  And when grace from Allah falls upon you, he is bound to say, as if there was no compelling bond between you and him [that he be always with you], “Oh were it so that I was with them, I would then have attained massive success.”
4:74  So, let them fight in the way of Allah— they are the ones who are willing to give this life in exchange for the Hereafter. Whoever fights in the way of Allah and is killed as a result, or emerges victorious, WE shall give him a transcendent reward.
4:75  What reason do you have not to fight in the way of Allah, while the deprived of the men, and the women, and the children are the ones praying, “O our Rabb, get us out of this settlement whose people are oppressors and render for us from YOUR divine domain a protecting ally, and render for us from YOUR divine domain a helper.”
4:76  Those who have believed, they fight in the way of Allah, whereas those who have rejected the Truth fight in the way of their false beliefs and overlords. Fight the allies of Satan. Behold! The plot of Satan is feeble.
4:77  Have you not observed those, to whom was [once] said, “Restrain your hands, and maintain the Prayers for anchor, and give Zakat?” Then when it was decreed upon them to fight—that is when a faction of them took to being in awe of men, akin to the awe of Allah, or even greater awe, and said, “Our Rabb, why have YOU decreed fighting upon us? If YOU had only delayed it for us for a short while!” Say, “The comfort of the world is short, and the Hereafter is best for whoever is conscious of God, and you will not be wronged, not the tiniest bit.
4:78  Wherever you be, death will catchup with you, even if you are in fortified towers. If something good befalls them, they say, “This [order] came directly from Allah,” and if something bad befalls them, they say, “this [order] came directly from you.” Say, “All [orders] come directly from Allah.” What is the matter with these people that they scarcely understand a truism?
4:79  [They think], whatever good has befallen you, is from Allah and whatever bad had befallen you, is from your own self? Whereas WE have sent you as a Messenger to humankind! Allah suffices as a witness.
4:80  Whoever obeys the Messenger has in fact obeyed Allah and whoever turns away— [irrespective], WE have not sent you as their keeper.
4:81  They say, “Obedience.” Then when they leave from your side, a party of them brood by night, counter to what you say. Allah records what they brood at night. So, renounce them and rely on Allah. Allah suffices as trustee.
4:82  Do they not ponder the Quran! If it were from other than Allah, they would surely find much contradiction in it.
4:83  When there comes to them a matter of security or fear, they propagate it. If they had referred it to the Messenger and to those among them vested with the authority of command, the ones among them who investigate the matter would have known of it. If it were not for the grace of Allah upon you, and HIS mercy, you would have surely followed Satan, except a few [of you].
4:84  So then [with the grace of Allah with you] fight in the way of Allah. You are not tasked except [to commit] yourself. And rally the believers. Allah offers hope that HE may curb the might of those who reject the Truth. Allah is strongest of might and strongest in restraining.
4:85  Whoever intercedes for a worthy cause has a share in it, and whoever intercedes for a bad cause has a measure of responsibility in it. And ever is Allah with existential power over all things.
4:86  When you are greeted by a salutation, then greet with one better than it or return it. Hearken, ever is Allah a reckoner of all things.
4:87  Allah! There is no other deity except HIM. HE will surely gather you all unto the Day of Resurrection. There is no doubt whatsoever in it and who could state a truism, truer than Allah?
4:88  What is it with you that you are two parties regarding the hypocrites, while Allah has let them relapse [to their devious ways] because of what they have earned? Do you wish that you could guide one who Allah has allowed to stray? Whosoever Allah lets go astray, never can you find for him any path.
4:89  They wish that you would deny the truth as they deny it, so for you to be the same. Do not therefore take allies from them until they forsake [their devious ways], for the cause of Allah. Then if they revert [to conspiring with your enemies against you], seize them and execute them inasmuch as you have found them [to be guilty of conspiring]. And do not take from among them an ally, nor a helper.
4:90  Except those who attach to a people with whom you have a treaty, or those who come to you because their hearts balk at fighting you or fighting their own people. If Allah had so willed, HE could have imposed them on you, so they would have fought you. So, if they have left you to be, have not fought you, and offered you peace, then Allah has not given you a recourse against them.
4:91  You shall find others who will desire security with you and security with their own people. Each time they are put back into the temptation [they cannot resist], they are drawn back into it. Therefore, if they have not left you to be and [have not] offered you peace and [have not] held back their hands— then seize them and execute them inasmuch as you encounter them. And for such as them, WE have set for you the clear authority [to declare war].
4:92  It cannot be for one who provides security that he kills one seeking [or otherwise entitled to] security, except mistakenly. Whoever mistakenly kills one who had sought security must therefore free a captive in custody and offer compensatory reparation to the victim’s family, except if they charitably remit it. If the victim was from a people hostile to you and had sought security, then [the due is] the freeing of a captive in custody and if he was from a people with whom you have a treaty then a compensatory reparation to the victim’s family and the freeing of a captive in custody. And if one cannot muster these, then fasting for two consecutive months, repentantly seeking forgiveness from Allah. Ever is Allah all-knowing, all-wise.
4:93  Whoever kills one seeking [or otherwise entitled to] security, premeditatedly, his appropriate consequence is Jahannam, therein to abide. And Allah has become indignant with him, and HE has denounced him. HE has proportioned for him a transcendent consequence.
4:94  O you who have embraced Faith, when you march out in the way of Allah, be fully transparent. And to one who offers you peace, do not say, “You are not secure,” pursuing the offering of this earthly life, because the abundant and continuing booties are with Allah. That is how you were before, then Allah conferred HIS grace upon you. Therefore, be fully transparent. Hearken! Ever is Allah fully aware of what you do.
4:95  They do not aspire to the same level— the believers without the preventive disability who sit back passively, and those who strive in the path of Allah with their possessions and their lives. Allah has graced those who strive with their possessions and lives, with a rank above those who sit back passively. To all Allah has promised the best [they deserve], and Allah has graced those who strive, above those who are passive, with a transcendent reward.
4:96  Many are the ranks from HIM, alongside forgiveness and mercy. And ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.
4:97  The ones who the angels collected [in death], while state in a state of wronging their own souls, [the angels] asked, “What circumstances were you in?” They said, “We were the deprived ones of the earth.” The angels asked, “Was the earth of Allah not wide enough so for you to seek another place in it?” So then, for such, the shelter is Jahannam— and wretched is it as a destination.
4:98  Except the deprived among the men, women, and children, who are unable to summon the means of extrication, nor can they chart a way.
4:99  As for such people, Allah offers hope of HIS pardoning of them. Ever is Allah pardoning, forgiving.
4:100  Whoever emigrates in the cause of Allah, he will find on earth many alternates, wide and abundant. Whoever leaves his home is a refugee unto Allah and HIS Messenger, then if death overtakes him, his reward has accrued on Allah. And ever is Allah forgiving, merciful.
4:101  When you march out in the land, it is not an offense attributable to you that you shorten the formal prayer [Salaat], if you fear that those who disbelieve will put you under testing conditions. Indeed, the disbelievers are set in open enmity to you.
4:102  And when you are amongst them, leading Salaat for them, let a party of them stand with you and let them take their armor and arms. Then after they have prostrated [i.e., finished their prayer], let them be furthest behind you and let the other party which has not prayed come forward—so to pray with you and let them be on their guard and [take] their armor and arms. The disbelievers would love [it] if you were neglectful of your arms and armor, and supplies, so they could fall upon you in one swoop. It is not an offense attributable to you if, troubled by downpour or sickness, you remove your arms and armor. Be on your guard. Allah has proportioned a humbling punishment for the disbelievers.
4:103  Then when you have finished your Prayer, continue to remember Allah standing, sitting, and on your sides. Then when you are sure of your safety, maintain the Prayers for anchor. Prayer is a time-specific, divine ordainment upon the believers.
4:104  Do not lose heart in your effort to overcome the people [you are fighting against]. If it is that you are suffering, then surely, they too are suffering just as you suffer. And you expect from Allah something they cannot expect. Ever is Allah all-knowing, all-wise.
4:105  Surely, WE have sent down upon you the timeless Book with the Truth, so you may judge between people by what Allah has shown you. Do not be an apologist for the treacherous.
4:106  Seek Allah’s forgiveness. Of certain! Ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.
4:107  And do not argue in defense of those who betray their own souls. Hearken! Allah does not love the one who is sinfully treacherous.
4:108  They can hide from men, but they cannot hide from Allah, WHO is with them when they converse at night, [fully knowing] that part of the conversation which HE approves not of. Ever does Allah encompass what they do.
4:109  Here are you all, arguing about them in this earthly life; but who will argue with Allah about them on the Day of Resurrection? Or who is to be their advocate?
4:110  Whoever acts wickedly, or wrongs his own soul, and subsequently seeks forgiveness from Allah, will find Allah forgiving, merciful.
4:111  Whoever earns a sin earns it against his own soul. Ever is Allah all-knowing, all-wise.
4:112  Whoever earns an offence or a sin and then throws [the charge] on one who is innocent of it— he has owned the burden of a slander along with a blatant sin.
4:113  If it were not for the grace of Allah upon you, and HIS mercy, fully determined were a party of them to mislead you. They do not mislead except themselves, and they cannot harm you one bit. Allah has sent down upon you the timeless Book along with the wisdom and taught you that which you would not have known. And the grace of Allah set upon you is transcendent.
4:114  There is no betterment whatsoever ensuing from much of their private talk, except when one enjoins charity, or fairness and empathy, or reconciliation between people. Whoever does so, seeking the assent of Allah, WE shall in return give him a transcendent reward.
4:115  Whoever breaches the Messenger after Guidance has become clear upon him, and follows other than the path of the believers— WE will let him turn to what he has turned to, and let him fuel Jahannam — and wretched is it as a destination
4:116  Hearken! Allah does not forgive their association of partners with HIM, whereas HE forgives what is short of that to whoever HE wills. Whoever associates partners with Allah has already strayed— a straying afar.
4:117  They invoke short of HIM, none except idols, feminine depictions at that! They are invoking none but a rebellious Satan
4:118  Allah has denounced him, and he has said, “I will most doggedly, and surely take from YOUR free-willed servants a warranted share.”
4:119  “And I shall persist in misleading them, and I shall persist in arousing desires in them, and I shall indeed order them— and so [in compliance], they will [just as] surely cut off the ears of the cattle. I shall indeed order them— [just as] surely, they will change the creation of Allah.” Whoso takes Satan for an ally, instead of Allah, he has already lost—an open [unabating] loss.
4:120  He holds out promises to them, and he incites their desire. But what he promises to them is nothing but a delusion.
4:121  Those [who have fallen for Satan’s delusion]—their shelter is Jahannam. They will not find an escape from it.
4:122  Those who have embraced Faith, and have done the right deeds, WE shall admit them to gardens, subservient to which rivers flow, abiders therein, beyond time. The promise of Allah is true and real and who can be truer than Allah in word?
4:123  Not is [Paradise earned] by your wishful claim or the wishful claim of the people of timeless Book [of Scripture]. Whoever does an odious deed, he will be given the consequence of it. He will find for himself besides Allah, neither a guardian nor a helper.
4:124  Whoever, man or woman, performs from the right deeds, and is a believer— those will be admitted to the Garden, and they will not be wronged even a tiny spec.
4:125  And who could be better of faith than one who has surrendered his being to Allah, and is selflessly good unto others, and follows the spiritual legacy of Abraham, the seeker of Truth? And Allah took Abraham as a beloved friend.
4:126  To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and on the earth. And Allah is ever encompassing of everything.
4:127  They seek your opinion in regards [to matters related to] women. Say, “Allah opines for you regarding them, along with what is conveyed to you in the timeless Book regarding orphans of the women, the ones to whom you give not what is decreed for them, the while you incline to a marital commitment with them and the deprived among the children. And [the Book conveys] that you always stand for treating the orphans equitably. Whatever you do of any good— of certain, ever is Allah all-knowing of it.
4:128  If a wife is fearful of demeaning behavior or spurning from her husband-guardian, then no offense is attributable to them in that they seek a settlement between themselves. And the settlement [between them] is best. And possessiveness has been made inherent to the soul. If you do good and restrain yourself [in consciousness of God], then hearken, ever is Allah aware of what you do.
4:129  You will not be able to be objectively equal towards [your] wives, even if you were to so desire. So then, do not be completely inclined to one to the exclusion of the other, leaving her like one kept in pending. And if you mend things and remain conscientious, of certain, ever is Allah forgiving, merciful.
4:130  And if the two do separate, Allah will give sufficiency to each, from HIS abundance. Allah is ever infinite of means, wise.
4:131  To Allah belongs whatever there is in the heavens and whatever there is on earth. WE did indeed direct those to whom the timeless Book [of Scripture] was given before you, and to you, to remain conscious of Allah. Should you disbelieve, then [know that] to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Ever is HE self-sufficient, owner of all praise.
4:132  To Allah belongs whatever there is in the heavens and whatever there is on earth. Allah suffices as trustee.
4:133  If HE wills, HE can remove you, O humankind, and bring forth others. And ever is Allah in complete control over that.
4:134  Whoever intends [through his deeds] the reward of this world— with Allah is the reward of this world and the Hereafter. And ever is Allah all-hearing, all-seeing.
4:135  O you who have embraced Faith, be steadfastly dutiful with the [utmost] fairness, [serving] as witnesses for Allah, even while it [i.e., your truthful testimony] be against your own selves, or parents or close relatives— or whether the person be rich or poor, because Allah has a higher claim to both. Do not therefore follow your whims, [so] that you are just. If you twist, or if you withhold [your testimony], know that Allah is fully aware of what you do.
4:136  O you who have embraced Faith, believe in Allah and HIS Messenger and HIS timeless Book which HE sent down upon HIS Messenger, and HIS timeless Book which HE sent down before. Whoever disbelieves in Allah, and HIS angels, and HIS revealed messages, and HIS prophets and the Last Day, has already strayed— a straying afar.
4:137  Hearken! Those who have come to believe, then disbelieve, then believe, then disbelieve, and then grow in their disbelief—Allah is not to forgive them, and HE is not to guide them to head to a way.
4:138  Convey to the hypocrites [who fall back to disbelief in such a way] that for them is an agonizing punishment.
4:139  Those who take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers— are they seeking through them the might [they deem missing], when all the might belongs to Allah?
4:140  HE has already revealed to you in the timeless Book that when you hear the messages of Allah being refuted about and mocked at, do not sit amongst them until they engage in some other subject. You, in that case [of staying there] would [fall into] their pattern. Surely, Allah is the One to gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers in Jahannam — all together.
4:141  [They are] the ones waiting to see what happens to you. So, if there was victory for you from Allah, they said, “Were we not on your side?” And if there was a share for the disbelievers to have, they said [to them], “Did we not exercise our influence over you and immunize you from the believers?” Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Allah will never make a way for the disbelievers against the believers.
4:142  Surely, the hypocrites would dupe Allah, whereas HE is their duper. When they stand for prayer, they stand unmotivated, only to be seen by people. And little do they remember Allah.
4:143  Wavering between that which is neither [a committal] toward these here, nor [a committal] toward these here. Whoever Allah lets go astray, you cannot find a way for him.
4:144  O you who have embraced Faith, do not take the disbelievers as your allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to render unto Allah a clear warrant against yourselves?
4:145  The hypocrites will be in the lowest depth of the Fire, and you will never find a helper for them,
4:146  save those who repent, and make amends, and hold fast to Allah, and purify their Faith for Allah. Thence, those are with the believers. And Allah shall grant the believers a transcendent reward.
4:147  What would Allah accomplish with your punishment, if you are grateful [to HIM] and you believe [in HIM]? Ever is Allah all-appreciative, ever knowing.
4:148  Allah does not love the public voicing of ill-deeds, except for one who is wronged. Ever is Allah all-hearing, all-knowing.
4:149  If you disclose a good, or conceal it, or pardon a trespass [against you]— assuredly, Allah is ever pardoning, ever in complete control of all things and their measure.
4:150  Indeed! Those who disbelieve Allah and HIS Messengers, wanting that they make a distinction between Allah and HIS [several] Messengers, while saying, “We believe in some, and we disbelieve some,” and want that they adopt a path between that —
4:151  Those, in reality, are the disbelievers, and WE have prepared for the disbelievers a humbling punishment.
4:152  Those who believe in Allah and HIS Messengers, and make no distinction between any of them, to such HE shall give them their rewards. And ever is Allah forgiving, all-merciful.
4:153  The people of timeless Book [of Scripture] ask you to cause a book to descend upon them from the sky. They, in fact, did ask even greater than that of Moses. Said they, “Show us Allah, plain for all to see,” whereupon the thunderbolt seized them for their wrong. Later they took to [worshipping] the calf, even after telling proofs had come to them. Thereafter WE pardoned them regarding that. And WE gave Moses evident authority.
4:154  WE raised the mountain above them in [witness] to their covenant and WE said to them, “Enter the gate, prostrating,” and WE said to them, “Do not transgress the Sabbath.” And WE took from them an inviolably sacred covenant.
4:155  So, [they are accountable] for their breaking of their covenant, and their disbelief in the signs of Allah, and their slaying of the Prophets without any right, and their saying, “Our hearts are draped [and insular thereby].” Nay, Allah has set a seal upon [their hearts], for their rejection of the Truth. Thus, they do not believe except a little.
4:156  And [they are accountable for] for their disbelief, and their utterance of the monstrous slander against Mary.
4:157  And [for] their saying, “Certain it is, we killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, Messenger of Allah.” They did not kill him or crucify him, but it was made to seem so to them. Surely, those who differ therein are indeed mired in uncertainty of it. There is not any knowledge of it for them [to pursue], except the pursuit of their [unfounded] assumption. They certainly did not kill him.
4:158  Nay, Allah raised him unto HIMSELF. And ever is Allah almighty, all-wise.
4:159  There is none from the people of the timeless Book [of Scripture] who will not believe in HIM before [the final moment of] his death, and on the day of resurrection HE will be a witness against them.
4:160  So, for the wrongdoing of those who followed the Jewish faith, WE forbade them some wholesome things which theretofore were lawful for them, and for their chronic hinderances to the way of Allah.
4:161  And [for] their taking usury while it was explicitly forbidden to them, and their expropriation of people’s possessions in false ways. WE have prepared for the disbelievers amongst them a painful punishment.
4:162  But the ones deeply rooted in Knowledge, from amongst them, and the believers, believe in that which has been revealed to you and that which was revealed before you. And the ones abiding with Prayer and the givers of Zakat and the believers in Allah and the Last Day —to such, WE shall give a transcendent reward.
4:163  Behold, WE have directed inspiration toward you just as WE directed inspiration toward Noah and the Prophets after him: WE directed inspiration toward Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Tribes and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, and WE gave David Zabūr.
4:164  And there are messengers about whom WE have already narrated to you, and messengers about whom WE have not narrated to you. And Allah spoke to Moses directly.
4:165  — Messengers [sent as] conveyers of divine tidings and warners, so that there not be for humankind any argument against Allah in the aftermath of the Messengers. And ever is Allah almighty, all-wise.
4:166  But it is Allah, HE bears witness to what has been revealed to you. HE revealed it, with HIS knowledge. And the angels bear witness, while sufficient is Allah as a witness.
4:167  Hearken! Those who disbelieve and hinder others from the way of Allah have already strayed— a straying afar.
4:168  Surely, the ones who disbelieve and do wrong, Allah is not to forgive them, nor is HE to guide them on a course—
4:169  except the course to Jahannam, abiders therein beyond time. And ever is that easy for Allah.
4:170  O humankind, there has come to you the Messenger with the truth from your Rabb. So, believe. It is for your own good. If you now disbelieve— surely to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Ever is Allah all-knowing, all-wise.
4:171  O people of the timeless Book [of Scripture], do not induct exaggerations in your religion and do not attribute to Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more and no less than a prophet of Allah and a Word of HIS which HE awarded to Mary and a spirit from HIM. So, believe in Allah and HIS Messenger and do not say, “Trinity.” Desist! That is better for you. Allah is only One God. Beyond human senses in HIS glory and power, far exalted is HE to have a son. To HIM belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever there is on earth. Allah suffices as trustee.
4:172  Never would the Messiah consider it unworthy to be Allah’s devoted worshipper, nor would the Angels who are near to HIM. Whoever feels unworthy about being a worshipper of God, and arrogantly rejects, [shall see his error] for HE shall assemble them all together unto HIMSELF.
4:173  As for those who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds, to such HE will fully repay their rightful dues, and then give them more from HIS grace. As for those who were scornful, and arrogantly defied, WE will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will not find for themselves besides Allah any ally or helper.
4:174  O humankind, an authentic proof has now come to you from your Rabb: WE have sent down upon you a guiding light.
4:175  As for those who have believed in Allah and held fast to HIMHE shall admit them into mercy from HIM, and grace, and guide them unto HIMSELF on a straight path.
4:176  They seek clarification from you. Say Allah clarifies the kalālah for you. If one has died [without successor or succession] and he has no child, and has a sister, then for her is half of what he left behind, and he is to inherit from her if she has no child. If there were two females, they then they together get two thirds of what he left behind. If the [deceased men] were with siblings, men as well as women, then the male will get the equivalent share of two females. Allah makes it clear for you lest you err. Allah is all-knowing of all things.
