37:1
By those dutifully arrayed in columns
37:2
—by the reproachers, reproaching
37:3
—by the reciters in remembrance
37:4
Of certain, your God is categorically ONE.
37:5
The
Rabb of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is between the two, and the
Rabb of the [countless] sunrises [dawning every moment on the spinning earth].
37:6
It is
US—WE have adorned the earthly sky with the splendor of the celestial lights
37:7
And as protection from every defiant errant entity [
shayṭān]
37:8
not attuned to the highest agencies. And they are pushed away from all sides—
37:9
kept away. And for them is a constant dire consequence
37:10
except one who has appropriated the appropriable. [Such] then is trailed by a bright flame.
37:11
So, inquire of them, are they the most intense creation or such entities
WE have created? Indeed,
WE have created them from gelled clay
.
37:12
Nay!
You are fascinated [by the signs], whereas they scoff
37:13
And when they are reminded, they remember not.
37:14
And when they see a sign, they seek to scoff
37:15
And they say, “This is nothing else except plain sorcery.
37:16
What! After we have died and become dust and bones— are we in fact resurrection-bound?
37:17
And our foremost forefathers as well?”
37:18
Say, “Yes, and you will be humbly compliant.”
37:19
For it is only a single reprimand, then forthrightly they will behold.
37:20
And they said, “Woe is us. This is the Day of Surrender and Reckoning.”
37:21
[It was said], “This is the day of sorting which you used to deny.”
37:22
“Gather those who did wrong along with their consorts and what they were worshipping
37:23
besides Allah, then lead them to the path of
Jaḥīm.
37:24
And stop them. They indeed do owe answers.
37:25
What besets you, that you are not helping each other?”
37:26
Rather, this day they are eager to submit.
37:27
And they confronted each other, demanding answers,
37:28
They said, “You were the ones who came to us from the right of us.”
37:29
They said, “Nay! Not ever were you believers.
37:30
It was not for us to have any authority over you. On the contrary, you were ever an unrestrainedly usurping people.
37:31
So, justified upon us [all] is the word of our
Rabb. We are deservedly partakers [of the punishment of our sins]—
37:32
we lured you. We were allurers.”
37:33
So, this day they are joint partners in the punishment.
37:34
Of certain, that is how
WE deal with the flouters of divine guidance.
37:35
Indeed, they were arrogantly defiant, whenever it was said to them, “There is no god except Allah.”
37:36
Saying, “Are we to abandon our gods for a possessed poet?”
37:37
Nay! He came to them with the Truth and validated the messengers.
37:38
Lo! You are sure to partake [now], the painful punishment [of this day].
37:39
And you will not be requited, except for what you were doing.
37:40
Excepted are the purified devotees of Allah
37:41
Those have a provision, reliably available [on desire]
37:42
Joyous fruits [of every kind]. And ever honored are they
37:43
in the gardens of the eternal bliss
37:44
upon honored seats, mutually engaged.
37:45
Rounds will be made about them with a cup [filled] from a spring for eyes to see,
37:46
Radiant-white, delicious for its drinkers
37:47
No inebriant in it, nor are they to be intoxicated from it
37:48
And with them are ones attentively focused of gaze, earnest eyed.
37:49
as if they were pristine nestled eggs
37:50
Thus [situated], they engaged with one another, inquiring—
37:51
Said, one of them who verbalized the moment, “I did have a close companion,
37:52
who used to say, “Are you really of the ones who vouch [for this Truth]:
37:53
Is it that once we are dead, and we have become dust and bones, we are still to be held accountable?”
37:54
Said [another], “Would you keep yourselves apprised?”
37:55
So, he looked for [his close companion] and saw him in the confines of
Jaḥīm.
37:56
He said, “By Allah, you almost dragged me down.
37:57
If it were not for the blessing of my
Rabb, I would surely have been of the ones summoned [to
Jaḥīm]
37:58
So then is it that we are not death-bound
37:59
beyond our first death? And are we not to ever suffer?
37:60
Truly, this here is precisely the transcendent success!”
37:61
For the like of this, then let the workers work.
37:62
Is that the better welcoming reception or the tree of
Zaqqum—
37:63
which
WE have appointed as an ordeal for the ones who persist in wrong?
37:64
Verily, it is a tree which emerges in the depth of
Jaḥīm
37:65
Its spathe, as if it were the heads of the devils—
37:66
So [for their lusty sins], they are to eat of it. That their bellies may get their fill of it.
37:67
Then to top it off, for them shall be a brew from water bereft of mercy [
ḥamīm]
.
37:68
Then indeed, their defined return, directly to
Jaḥīm.
37:69
Surely, they had found out their fathers to be astray
37:70
Yet [without giving pause] they are hurried on their tracks!
37:71
And most certainly, before [their fathers] most of their predecessors had gone astray.
37:72
And
WE had indeed sent warners in their midst.
37:73
So, observe how the end-fate was of the ones [fairly] warned.
37:74
[All follow blindly] except the purified devotees of Allah.
37:75
And Noah did call out unto
US— the most excellent of the responders.
37:76
WE delivered him and his adherents from the great distress
37:77
And
WE made his progeny—they, the remaining ones.
37:78
And WE have left intact for him [a blessed legacy], in the generations to come:
37:79
Peace [
Salaam] forever upon Noah in all Realms.
37:80
Indeed, that is how
WE requite the ones who do good in devotion to God.
37:81
He is ever of
OUR believing devotees.
37:82
Further to that,
WE drowned the others.
37:83
And indeed, of his persuasion surely was Abraham
37:84
when he arrived [at the truth about] his
Rabb with an irreproachably earnest heart
37:85
[Remember] when he said to his father and his people, “What is it that you are worshipping?
37:86
Is it falsehood— gods other than Allah— you want?
37:87
Then what is your concept about the
Rabb of all Realms?”
37:88
So, he turned his sight into the [infinitude of the] stars
37:89
and said, “I truly am stricken sick.”
37:90
They then turned away from him and left without looking back.
37:91
So, he made his way to their gods. [Seeing the food offerings] he said, “Why do you not eat?
37:92
What is the matter with you that you do not articulate?
37:93
Then he stepped up to them, striking with the right
37:94
And so, they came rushing to confront him.
37:95
He said, “Do you worship what you yourselves sculpt?
37:96
Whereas Allah has given existence to you and what you do!”
37:97
They said, “Build an enclosure for him, then throw him in
Jaḥīm.”
37:98
Such had they intended as a plan to do away with him, and in return
WE rendered them the lowliest.
37:99
While he said, “I am set to depart unto my
Rabb.
HE shall guide me.”
37:100
“My
Rabb, grant me a gift of the righteous.”
37:101
So then,
WE give him the tiding about a forbearing boy.
37:102
Then in time when [his son] had reached the age to accompany him on his tasks, he said to him, “O my son, I do see this dream, that I am sacrificing you. So, look deep, what is it that you see?” He said, “O my papa, do what you have been directed. You will find me, if Allah wills, to be amongst the persevering.”
37:103
Thus, when both had surrendered [to do
HIS will], he set him down to the forehead,
37:104
And
WE called to him: “O Abraham,
37:105
You have already lived up to the vision.” Behold! Thus, do
WE reward the ones who do good in selfless devotion to God.
37:106
Indeed, this categorically was the telling trial
37:107
And
WE ransomed him with a great sacrifice.
37:108
And WE have left intact for him [a blessed legacy], in the generations to come:
37:109
Peace [
Salaam] forever upon Abraham.
37:110
Thus do
WE reward the ones who do good in selfless devotion to God.
37:111
He truly is of
OUR believing devotees.
37:112
And
WE gave him the tiding of Isaac, a prophet from the righteous.
37:113
And
WE bestowed
OUR blessings upon him and upon Isaac. And from amongst their progeny are [both], one who does good selflessly in devotion to God, and one who is openly unjust to his own soul.
37:114
And
WE did confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.
37:115
WE delivered them both, and their people from the great inescapable distress.
37:116
And
WE helped them, so they were the ones to prevail.
37:117
And
WE gave them both the explicit timeless Book [of Scripture].
37:118
And
WE guided them both to the [timelessly] straight Path.
37:119
And WE have left intact for them both [blessed legacies], in the generations to come:
37:120
Peace [
Salaam] forever upon Moses and Aaron.
37:121
Thus, do we reward the ones who do good in selfless devotion to God.
37:122
Verily, they both are of
OUR believing devotees.
37:123
And indeed
Ilyas was one of the Messengers
37:124
when he had said to his people, “Have you no consciousness of God?
37:125
Will you invoke
Baʿl and forsake the best of the Creators?
37:126
[Will you forsake] Allah? Your
Rabb and the
Rabb of your foremost forefathers.”
37:127
But they denied him— for that they shall surely be arraigned—
37:128
except the purified devotees of Allah.
37:129
And WE have left intact for him [a blessed legacy], in the generations to come:
37:130
Peace [
Salaam] forever upon
Ilyas and his kind
37:131
Surely thus, do we reward those who do good in selfless devotion to God.
37:132
He is truly of
OUR believing devotees.
37:133
And indeed, Lot was certainly one of the Messengers
37:134
when
WE delivered him and his family— all together,
37:135
Except for an old woman among the laggards
37:136
Then
WE annihilated the others
37:137
And indeed, you pass by [their ruins] morning-bound
37:138
and by night. Will you then not seek to understand?
37:139
And indeed, Jonah was certainly one of the Messengers
37:140
when he fled onto the packed vessel.
37:141
So [to lighten the vessel], he drew lots— and he was of the discards.
37:142
Thereupon, the fish swallowed him whole, while he was still blameworthy
37:143
And were it not that he was ever in prayerful awe of God,
37:144
he would have remained in its belly through to the day all will be raised again.
37:145
So,
WE flung him [naked] on the naked [shore], and he was stricken sick.
37:146
And
WE grew and spread over him a plant of gourd
37:147
And
WE sent him unto a hundred thousand, plus they were increasing.
37:148
So [in vast numbers] they embraced Faith, and
WE granted them worldly fulfilment through to a time.
37:149
Now query them [of their concept of God]: Are the daughters meant for
your Rabb while the sons are meant for them?
37:150
Or did
WE create the Angels female, while they stood witness?
37:151
Is it not of their own falsehood, they so assuredly say:
37:152
“Allah has begotten,” while they are categorical liars.
37:153
Has
HE chosen daughters over sons?
37:154
What ails you. How do you come to conclude?
37:155
Do you not mindfully consider?
37:156
Or do you have a revealing authoritative claim?
37:157
Then come forth with your scripture if you are so full of truth.
37:158
And they set up a kinship between
HIM and the
Jinn, while the
Jinn have categorically known that they will be mandatorily presented [for Judgement]
37:159
Limitless in
HIS might and glory is Allah, far above anything they depict.
37:160
[Such unconsidered words do they all utter]— save the purified devotees of Allah.
37:161
So, [let the purveyors of falsehood know], “You and that which you worship—
37:162
not can you all ever misinform anyone about HIM
37:163
except one who is the fuel of
Jaḥīm
37:164
And there is none amongst us— except a knowledge-based standing, he has.
37:165
And we surely are ones who stand shouldered together
37:166
While we ever extol
HIS limitless might and glory.”
37:167
Surely, they [who are in disbelief] were always saying
37:168
“Were that there was a reminder with us from the former ones
37:169
we would surely have been Allah’s purified devotees.”
37:170
So [here they are], they have disbelieved in it. Accordingly, they shall come to know.
37:171
OUR Word has already gone forth for
OUR message-bearing devotees.
37:172
Of certain, they assuredly are the victorious ones
37:173
And indeed,
OUR forces, they assuredly are the prevailing ones.
37:174
So, turn
you away from them for a while
37:175
And just observe them, for soon they shall observe.
37:176
So is it with
OUR punishment they seek haste?
37:177
For when it descends upon their courtyard— dark will be the morning of those who were fully warned.
37:178
So, turn
you away from them for a while
37:179
And just observe, for soon they will observe.
37:180
Limitless is the might and glory of
your Rabb. The
Rabb of almightiness, far above anything they depict.
37:181
And peace [
Salaam] be upon the Messengers
37:182
And all praise is for Allah,
Rabb of all the Realms.
